Build Skills for Modern Automation and Robotics

Automation and robotics are transforming industries, agriculture, and sustainable production worldwide. In this programme, you will learn how intelligent technologies can improve efficiency, safety, productivity, and sustainability in industrial and bioeconomy environments.

By the time you graduate, you will be ready to work in international engineering teams and develop smart automation solutions for a rapidly changing world.

During your studies, you will:

  • be able to design automation, robotics, measurements, control systems, and user interfaces  
  • become familiar with different levels of automation  
  • be able to plan and implement control systems and assess alternative solutions for control and adjustment  
  • gain expertise in programmable logic, fieldbuses, factory networks, functional safety, PC-based systems, and user interfaces  

After graduation, you will be able to use robotics and machine vision to create solutions that improve production efficiency. You will master key design tools used in developing control applications and gain a solid understanding of automation, and instrument electrical design standards.

You will also learn the basics of functional safety, enabling you to assess risks in planned solutions. In addition, you will gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment similar to that used in industry.

Comprehensive Studies in Automation and Engineering

At Jamk, the Automation and Robotics programme provides you with a broad and versatile engineering foundation.  

During your studies, you will:

  • build a strong foundation in electrical engineering, including circuit calculations and electrical safety  
  • learn the basics of electronics, such as designing simple embedded devices  
  • develop skills in information technology, including programming, information systems, and network technologies  
  • study the fundamentals of logic programming, measurement, and control  
  • explore automation system modules, including programmable logic, fieldbuses, factory networks, and user interfaces 

You will also deepen your expertise through design-oriented studies and:

  • learn about automation, and instrument electricity design.  
  • study discrete automation and motion, including equipment, control systems, and application programming tools used in manufacturing.  
  • focus on the use of robotics and machine vision in modern production environments

During the first year, you can specialise either in Industrial Automation and Robotics, focusing on smart production systems and modern manufacturing, or in Biosystems Automation and Robotics, where automation and digital technologies are applied to sustainable agriculture, food production, and bioeconomy solutions. 

Specialise in Industrial Automation and Robotics

This specialisation focuses on modern industrial automation, robotics, intelligent control systems, and industrial production environments. The studies prepare you for careers in industrial automation, international engineering projects, and advanced manufacturing environments.  

You will learn to design and develop:

  • automation systems  
  • robotics applications  
  • machine vision solutions  
  • control and measurement systems  
  • smart manufacturing technologies

Specialise in Biosystems Automation and Robotics

This specialisation combines automation and robotics with sustainable bioeconomy solutions for agriculture.

You will learn the fundamentals of crop production and how to apply automation, robotics, and digital technologies to smart bioeconomy applications. The studies focus on developing sustainable solutions for food production, energy production, and agriculture.

You will gain multidisciplinary expertise in:

  • smart agriculture technologies  
  • biosystems automation  
  • sustainable natural resource management  
  • digital solutions for agriculture

Bachelor of Engineering, 240 ECTS credits

  • Basic studies 24 ECTS credits (working life competence)
  • Vocational studies according to your chosen specialisation 131 ECTS credits (mathematics, physics, information technology, basic studies in electrical and automation technology, automation application and equipment design and implementation, robotics and projects)
  • Optional professional studies 30 credits
  • Elective studies 11 ECTS credits

Bachelor’s thesis 

In your bachelor's thesis, you will demonstrate your competence to apply your knowledge and skills in a practical expert task, related to vocational studies. The thesis is completed at the end of the studies and consists of a theoretical portion and a practical research or development project. In other words, this is an independent thesis with a scope of 15 credits. As a rule, the thesis is carried out in cooperation with working life, and it ought to solve problems arising from work-life demand. 

For the bachelor’s degree, you must also write a maturity test on the subject area of your thesis, which demonstrates your knowledge of the field and language skills. 

Lessons, Projects, and Teamwork

In addition to theoretical studies, this degree programme includes a wide range of laboratory work, projects, and group assignments. The studies are designed to reflect real working life as closely as possible, and some projects are carried out in collaboration with companies.

During the first and second year, there is an 80% attendance requirement, meaning you are expected to attend at least 80% of the scheduled teaching.

If you experience delays in obtaining your residence permit at the beginning of the autumn semester, Jamk offers the possibility to start your studies remotely during the autumn semester of 2027. However, you are strongly encouraged to join on-campus teaching as soon as your residence permit is granted. From January 2028 onwards, remote study is no longer possible, and all students are expected to continue their studies on campus.

By actively participating in classes, you will develop essential working-life skills such as teamwork and communication, while also getting to know your fellow students. If necessary, justified absences, such as those due to illness, can be agreed upon with your teachers.

After graduation, you will have excellent career opportunities in international technology and engineering fields.

Industrial Automation and Robotics careers

Automation experts are needed in a wide range of tasks, including the operation and supervision of industrial processes. As an automation engineer, your work may involve system and equipment purchasing, definition and design, as well as product development, programming, and operation and maintenance.

Your responsibilities can also extend to management and administration, sales and marketing, technical purchasing, customer service, training, or consulting.

You may find employment, for example in industrial plants, equipment supplier companies, or engineering offices. You will most likely work on international projects, initially as a member of a project group and with sufficient experience as a leader of a project group.

Typical job titles include:

Biosystems Automation and Robotics careers

After graduation, you will be prepared for a wide range of careers in the natural resources and bioeconomy sectors, including process development, product and service innovation, specialist and consulting roles, as well as sales and marketing tasks.  

Typical employers include technology and bioeconomy companies, engineering and consulting firms, research organizations, and startup companies developing sustainable solutions for the future.

Typical job titles include:

  • Project Manager
  • Design Engineer
  • Project Development Engineer  
  • Sales Engineer
  • Entrepreneur or Startup Founder  

Further Studies

After completing the university of applied sciences degree and gaining two years of work experience, you can apply for master's degree studies. Alternatively, you can apply for master's degree programmes in universities, master's degree programmes in foreign higher education institutions or, for example, a technical university that can credit some of your university of applied sciences degree studies.

At Jamk, you can also supplement your competence with various adult education programmes, such as specialization training, a diploma in higher education, or other units, which are available from individual seminar days to broader study modules.

Holders of a master's degree can also apply for postgraduate degrees at universities. Universities assess the criteria for admission of degree students on a case-by-case basis.

How to apply

There are two application periods; rolling admission and joint application. Please note that that the student selection methods differ between the two application periods.

Jamk's rolling admission period is 14 September - 19 November 2026 (until 3.00 p.m. Finnish time):

  • Eligible students will be accepted already during the application period on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • You can apply only one degree programme, so choose the one you truly want to study.
