JAMK´s principles of open access publication

JAMK’s principles of open access publication In JAMK, the practices of open science have been centralized. The process has been made as smooth to the author as possible. By parallel publishing the staff’s scientific publications on an open publication archive, we ensure the open access to our publications.

The goal is to parallel publish all scientific articles

Open access is ensured by parallel publishing the article's final draft version on an open publication archive, which for JAMK is Theseus. Parallel publishing of scientific publications produced in JAMK is always required, if the publisher allows it (Rector’s decision 10/2016).

The parallel publishing obligation mainly applies to the scientific publications by JAMK staff (including Open Access publications), in other words individual articles published in a scientific journal, serial publication, conference publication or other compilation work. Other publications can also be parallel published.

Choose a high-quality publisher, favour Open Access

The article’s author will choose the most suitable publishing channel with regard to its quality and impact, while favouring the high-quality Open Access publishers of each field (Green Open Access is the preferred choice) and open access serial publications. JAMK does not recommend hybrid model publishing. So-called predatory publishers with questionable quality standards and publishing motives should be avoided.

The parallel publishing right is noted in the agreement

When making the publishing agreement, the author should pay attention to the publication’s parallel publishing rights. Most publishers will allow the parallel publishing of a certain version after a determined embargo. If the article has several authors, it is recommended to agree on parallel publishing at this stage.

JAMK’s Publication Services will manage the parallel publishing process

After JAMK’s Publication Services has received the final draft from the author, the service will contact the publisher in order to find out the parallel publishing right and possible embargo and will manage the parallel publishing process on Theseus. Before publishing, a front page will be added to the parallel published file, which has the link and instructions on referencing the original publication in order to ensure the correct reference accumulation data. Benefits of parallel publishing – why open access?

  • Parallel publishing supports the openness and transparency of science. Scientific information produced with public funds will become openly accessible to all (without paywalls or separate logins).

  • Open access improves the discoverability of publications and enhances the researcher’s visibility and the possibility of gaining references. Articles saved in a publication archive can be easily found with search engines.

  • Open access ensures that the publications are accessible to the staff and students, and partners, companies and alumnus, for example, can also freely utilise the knowledge and publications researched at JAMK. JAMK’s impact will grow and the visibility of the expertise of its personnel in education export, service business and enterprise co-operation will improve.

  • Parallel publishing will provide the publications with a permanent domain name (URN namespace) and ensures permanent and open access to the publications.

  • Some publishers allow parallel publishing in the private publication archives of institutions of higher education, but not in commercial services (such as ResearchGate).

  • Open access publication is a merit that raises the profile of both the expert and their organisation.

  • More and more often, financiers also require open access to the scientific publications.

Openness of research materials

In addition to the open access publication of research publications, open access to research data and other background material is also vital to open science.
