Antoinette Mintah-Asare is the first student to graduate from the English-taught Digital Rehabilitation Master School programme. Her interest in expanding her knowledge and developing her professional skills in rehabilitation was sparked during a practical training in mental health services.

My name is Antoinette Mintah-Asare. I am from Ghana, West Africa. I am a goal-oriented and challenge-motivated person. In my free time, I like to watch good movies and do a lot of research.

I have lived in Finland for almost ten years. My previous education is in nursing - I got my bachelor’s degree from Centria University of Applied Sciences in 2020. I have worked in nursing homes, service housing and in hospital.

My interest in rehabilitation was sparked during my practical training periods on my previous studies. I worked with people with mental health problems and in a psychiatric children's ward. I was curious to learn more and wanted to help, so I decided to apply for further education.

During the practical training periods, I have learnt that many people are reluctant to seek help for mental health problems due to fear of being stigmatized. However, technological advances can improve access to services and lower the threshold for seeking help. That's why I chose digital rehabilitation path.

The studies have broadened my professional skills. Digital rehabilitation is a person-centered approach that respects the needs and wishes of the client.

The most surprising thing about my studies was the amount of research required in almost all the tasks. However, it developed my research skills - now when I search for information, I can always look for evidence-based knowledge.

Now that I have graduated, I want to continue to develop myself and update my skills. I would like to be able to have a particular impact on young people, raise awareness of the benefits of early intervention for mental health problems, and help those in need of rehabilitation.

If you are interested in postgraduate studies and multidisciplinary rehabilitation, Jamk is a great choice. I was able to study at my own pace and received good support and guidance from my teachers on a sufficient and regular basis.

The Digital Rehabilitation (YAMK) programme started for the first time in autumn 2022. Read more about the Jamk Master School application and requirements here.
