As a specialist in sport and exercise physiotherapy you develop knowledge and skills to apply research-based methods to enhance advanced sport performance and prevent injuries as well as to use exercise as means to promote health and wellbeing. The focus of the programme is the specialization to manage prevention, gain expertise in clinical reasoning and decision making, and manage rehabilitation processes including collaboration with athletes, coaches and other sport professionals in multidisciplinary teams.

The focus of the programme

The focus of the programme is the specialization to manage prevention, gain expertise in clinical reasoning and decision making, and manage rehabilitation processes including collaboration with athletes, coaches and other sport professionals in multidisciplinary teams. In addition to competitive sports you will be able to promote the physically active lifestyle among people representing different age groups and levels of functioning and ensure their safe participation in recreational sport and exercise.

Study mode

The study mode is part-time studies. The courses take place both on-campus in JAMK’s facilities in Jyväskylä and online. In order to apply for the program the students are required to have at least two years of working experience in the relevant field.

Scope of the Education

If you are interested to strengthen your expertise in Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy this Master programme provides you an opportunity to build you competences and advance your professional career. The extent of the education is 90 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). 

As a part-time student, you can complete the Master programme in approximately three years. It is also possible to complete the programme in two years as a full-time student. The education will be delivered as a multiform teaching where courses are offered mostly online but also some contact teaching takes place on JAMK campus.

Entry requirements: Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy

  • The requirements for eligibility are a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy AND
  • at least two years (24 months) of work experience in the field of social services and health care after the bachelor's degree or other equivalent work experience in the field of sport and exercise. 

Application period: 3 – 17 January 2024 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time

Applying for degree programmes conducted in English at universities of applied sciences (UAS) takes place through an online application. 

  • Apply online 3 – 17 January 2024 by 3.00 p.m Finnish time on www.studyinfo.fi.
  • Attach the required documents (degree and work certificates and possible pre-assignment) to the online application by 24 January 2024 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time (UTC+2).

Entrance examination: Sport and Exercise Physiotheraphy

The entrance examination includes two mandatory parts: a pre-assignment (max. 40p.) and an interview (max. 60p.), altogether max. 100 points. The student selection is based on the total score of the entrance examination and pre-assignment.

Part 1: Pre-assignment

  • The questions are on the Studyinfo application when the application period begins.
  • The answers for the questions must be submitted to the application by 24 January 2024 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time. 
  • You have to score at least 20 out of 40 points in the pre-assignment for an invitation to the group interview (part 2).
  • The pre-assignment does not include pre-reading materials.

Part 2: Interview

  • The interview will be held online during weeks 11-13 (11 - 29 March 2024).
  • You have to score at least 20 out of 60 points in the group interview.
  • Applicant's English language skills will be assessed as a part of the entrance examination, thus, the entrance examination does not include a separate English language test.

Results of student selection: Steps for new students

Results are announced in the middle of April at the earliest and on 31 May 2024 at the latest.

  • Accept the offer of admission at studyinfo.fi
  • Enrol for attendance/non-attendance
  • NON-EU/EEA citizens: pay the tuition fee payment as soon as possible
  • Start your residence permit process immediately in May, carefully following the immigration authorities' instructions and regulations, so that you can receive your permit before your studies begin.
  • Studies will begin in Autumn 2024.
