In April 2026, BERT's international mobility programme brought together students and staff from the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) and the University of Rwanda (UR) in Jyväskylä, Finland.

Over the two intensive and inspiring weeks, participants explored Finnish higher education, rehabilitation services, and multicultural collaboration while building meaningful connections across cultures.

A Warm Welcome to Jyväskylä

The journey began with arrivals in Jyväskylä on April 6. After settling in, the group was ready to dive into a carefully designed programme hosted primarily at JAMK University of Applied Sciences. The week started with a warm welcome at the Dynamo campus, where participants were introduced to JAMK and its learning environment through a campus tour and presentations.

From the very beginning, the atmosphere emphasized openness, collaboration, and exchange—values that would shape the entire mobility experience.

Learning Through Participation

The programme combined academic learning with hands-on participation. Early sessions included activity-based group work courses led by senior lecturer Riikka Karvonen, offering both students and staff opportunities to engage together in interactive learning environments.

Later in the week, the focus expanded to multicultural work course with senior lecturer Jenni Koivumäki. These lectures encouraged participants to reflect on cultural diversity, communication, and professional practices in international contexts.

A particularly meaningful moment for the Finnish students was the student presentation session, where SUZA and UR students shared insights about their studies, cultures, and home countries. This exchange not only deepened mutual understanding but also highlighted the richness of global perspectives.

Insights into Finnish Education and Services

Throughout the first week, participants explored different aspects of the Finnish education and social care and rehabilitation systems. A visit to the Valteri Onerva special school offered valuable insights into special education practices and inclusive learning approaches.
