Aila Paloniemi, the chairperson of JAMKs board, member of Finnish Parliament

"Dear new students and members of our academic community! The academic year starts in a time of great challenges for the national and municipal economy and in global issues. Wars, conflicts and the poor security situation in Syria, Iraq and many other countries are driving an increasing number of asylum seekers and refugees to risk their lives in order to get to Europe. Based on the latest information, we are preparing to receive up to 15,000 asylum seekers this year. The escalating situation has created fertile ground for an increase in hate speech, discrimination and downright racism. We must reject this kind of development."

Jobs do not create themselves – we have also noticed this in Central Finland. Because there are fewer and fewer permanent jobs available, we are focusing more strongly on entrepreneurship training. During this academic year, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, the University of Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä Educational Consortium will test common entrepreneurship studies for the first time.

JAMK has excellent prospects for meeting the needs of the working life of the future. For instance, our Social and Health Studies master’s degree programme in Health Promotion has gained International Union for Health Promotion and Education accreditation, and JAMK’s business education its second international accreditation.

I am pleased to welcome you to Jyväskylä, to study at one of the best universities of applied sciences in Finland. The theme of our opening event, “build your own future”, is ideally suited to this time and this city. I wish you all a very successful academic year!
