Registration
As a route student, you have the right to register for the pathway courses in Peppi. In Peppi, you can see the courses included in your route in your personal study plan (HOPS). Registration for the first courses at the beginning of your route studies is done together with your teacher tutor during the orientation days. In addition to open route studies, you may register for other courses as well, but access to these cannot be guaranteed.
Check the registration periods in Peppi and read the registration instructions.
Personal Study Plan (HOPS)
As a open route student, you will have a HOPS discussion with your teacher tutor at the beginning of your studies. In the HOPS discussion, you will plan your personal study path together, including reviewing the possibility of crediting previous higher education studies and recognizing and accrediting prior learning during your Open Studies (RPL – Recognition of Prior Learning).
You can find more information about the RPL process on this page under the section “During Your Studies”: Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL).

During your studies
Below you will find useful information to support your studies.
Wellbeing during your studies
It’s important to take care of your well-being during your studies; when you feel well, learning becomes easier and more effective.
From the very beginning of your studies, it’s good to recognize your own resources and how you can influence them.
Coping and maintaining well-being consist of everyday actions. Get enough sleep, eat regularly and nutritiously, and do things that bring you joy and energy. Reduce energy-draining activities if possible, and add more things that “recharge your batteries.” Ask for help and guidance when needed.
Study Ability
Your personal resources are the skills, abilities, and qualities that help you cope with everyday challenges and achieve your goals. These resources have a significant impact on your ability to study. The study environment also affects student well-being and learning, and it’s important to consider it when maintaining study ability.
Read more about study ability on the FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) website. Also explore the wide range of services and events offered by the student union JAMKO and uMove, and join in on community activities and physical events to support your well-being!
Balancing Work and Studies
Many students struggle to balance work, studies, and other aspects of life. Combining work and studies requires scheduling, prioritizing, and integrating different responsibilities. On this page, you’ll find tips on how to schedule your studies and fit them into your life.
When starting your studies alongside work, be prepared to cut back on hobbies, volunteer work, and social activities to make time for studying. These don’t need to be eliminated entirely, but you’ll need to prioritize your time. When starting your studies, it’s not advisable to begin other major life changes at the same time. It’s best to take one big change at a time—once that change is running smoothly, you can start planning for new ones. Below, you’ll find tips for balancing work and studies.
Time Management and Scheduling
Learning and study techniques
You will need these skills both in higher education and in the rapidly evolving world of work.
What kind of learner are you? What motivates you to study? What kind of study methods suit you best?
Study skills and techniques can be practiced. There is no single technique that works for all learning situations—different methods are useful in different contexts. With good study skills, you can achieve more with less effort. These skills can be learned and developed throughout your studies.
Below, you’ll find links to information about Jamk’s study practices, learning to learn, and study techniques.
Information retrieval and reporting
Explore Jamk’s commonly used written guidelines for assignments and reporting templates. On the Writer’s Help page, you’ll find tips and inspiration for writing. Also check out the Information Retrieval Compass, which helps you find reliable sources of information.
Rules, principles, and quality in the Open University
Open Studies follow Jamk’s common rules and principles. Familiarize yourself with the Degree Regulations as well as JAMK’s pedagogical and ethical principles.
Jamk’s quality management is based on a quality system in which the student plays a central role. You can influence the quality of teaching by giving course feedback, which is collected after each course. In addition, Open Studies students receive a feedback survey twice a year—by responding, you can help improve the overall operations of Open Studies.

Completion of studies
At the first contact session of the course or when the online course opens, the methods of completion, possibilities for retaking assessments, and evaluation criteria will be reviewed. During the first contact session, the date of a possible exam will also be agreed upon, and the end date of the course will be announced. After this date, no further submissions will be accepted.
Studies completed through the Open University of Applied Sciences follow the same requirements and assessment criteria as those in degree programs.
You can track your study records in Peppi. During your period of study entitlement, you can also download an electronically verified transcript of records from Peppi’s Atomi service. See the instructions here.
Assessment of competence
Familiarize yourself with the assessment principles and evaluation criteria of the study modules.
Recognition of Prior Learning and Experience (RPL)
As a learner completing competence modules through the Open University of Applied Sciences or as a pathway student, you can apply for the recognition and accreditation of prior learning (RPL). Recognized competence will be recorded in Peppi as an assessment decision, which results in a performance entry (not credit transfer). In Open UAS studies, credit transfer from previously completed higher education studies (inclusion and substitution) is only possible within competence modules.
As a pathway student, you can apply for credit transfers (inclusion, substitution) during the degree phase. If your pathway includes studies for which you plan to apply for credit transfer later, you may choose other degree-relevant studies to replace them during the pathway. Your teacher tutor will assist you in selecting suitable studies.
Check more information about RPL here.
Cancelling and discontinuing studies
If you need to cancel or discontinue your Open UAS studies, please see the instructions here.
