In September 2025, the SmartCHANGE project was presented at two major conferences in Finland: the Finnish Congress at Sport Sciences and the Paediatric Work Physiology Conference.

At the Paediatric Work Physiology Conference September 9th to 12th, the project was introduced through two scientific posters:

  • "Insights from the SmartCHANGE Project in Finland" highlighted the research framework and the role of JAMK University of Applied Sciences’ Likes unit in applying participatory approaches to the development of e-health tools.
  • "Protocol for the SmartCHANGE Feasibility Study in Finnish Schools" outlined the design of an upcoming feasibility study to be conducted in schools. In this study, pupils will use the HappyPlant mobile application and Garmin activity trackers, while school nurses will utilize a web-based tool to monitor pupils’ progress and support behavior change. The overarching aim is to promote the health and well-being of children and adolescents through the development of innovative, technology-based solutions.

Principal Researcher Tuija Tammelin and Chief Specialists Piritta Asunta, and Anu Kangasniemi reported that the project generated significant interest and sparked meaningful discussions.

Topics included for example international collaboration, the use of artificial intelligence, behavior change theories and participatory research methods, and the implementation of the feasibility study in Finnish schools. A shared objective across these discussions was clear: promoting youth health through technology and reducing the long-term risk of chronic diseases in children and adolescents.

SmartCHANGE is funded by the Horizon Europe programme. More information on the SmartCHANGE website.
