A New Chapter for Finnish Alumni in China
March 2026 marked a special milestone for Finnish higher education in China. For the first time, the Embassy of Finland brought together alumni from 10 Finnish universities for two warm and lively gatherings, 17 March in Beijing (pictured below) and 19 March in Shanghai (pictured above).
What began simply as an idea to reconnect graduates quickly turned into something much bigger: a heartfelt reunion filled with memories, laughter, and the shared spirit of Finland.
Nearly 200 Alumni Reunited in Beijing and Shanghai
Nearly 200 participants joined the events, including representatives from the Embassy, the Consulate General and Finnish companies in China. The atmosphere in both cities was a mix of excitement, curiosity, and genuine joy as old friends reunited and new connections formed instantly.
Jamk was proudly represented by 12 alumni in two cities, each bringing their own story. They came from backgrounds in health care, business, engineering, and culture, yet they lit up the moment Jyväskylä was mentioned jointly with the alumni group of University of Jyväskylä.
Conversations flowed easily around shared memories. Many reflected on how their years in Finland shaped their values, for example open communication, trust, and lifelong learning, gains that have helped in developing their careers in China and beyond.
Building a Strong and Active Finnish Alumni Network
Attendees in both cities expressed a strong desire to continue this journey together. They hope to see a lasting and active Finnish alumni network in China, also more opportunities to meet, collaborate, and share experiences supported through stronger ties with Finnish companies, industries, and local partners.
Closer collaboration with the Embassy of Finland, FinnCham, and other Finnish organisations is seen important. These requests reflect a clear message: the alumni community is ready. Not just to reconnect, but to build something meaningful and lasting.
A Successful Initiative and a Promising Beginning
The Embassy of Finland’s initiative on these alumni events was successful. It has sparked new friendships, rekindled old ones, and set the foundation for an inspiring alumni community across China.
The positive energy in both Beijing and Shanghai showed just how strong the connection to Finland remains, no matter how far away life takes us. This is only the beginning, but already, it feels special.
