Do you want to deepen your knowledge on the French language after the basics? Come and learn more about the French language and culture!
In the course you will learn
- more about French pronunciation
- to use the French language in everyday interaction situations (Telling about yourself, describing past experiences, housework, travelling, clothes, studies and work)
- to know more about the characteristics of the culture of French-speaking countries.
The course also deals with the basic grammar of the French language. You will learn
- the past tense (le passé composé) of regular and irregular verbs
-near future, present progressive, near past
-the place and form of adjectives and adverbs
-ordinal numbers

Objectives
The object of the course:
You will continue to learn the basics of the French language and the culture of French speaking countries. By the end of the course, you are able to use simple phrases and sentences in spoken and written production. You expand your vocabulary and knowledge of language structures needed in everyday situations. You will be able to act in accordance with the norms of French culture in typical communication situations.
Course competences:
The course prepares and equips you to act and work in an international and multicultural environment.
The learning objectives of the course:
You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand the main points of a simple text. You are able to write a simple text using the vocabulary and structures you have learned on the course. You understand the cultural differences between your home country and France.

Implementation methods
Course schedule: The course will take place online from 2 September to 9 December 2026. Zoom lectures are held on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 18.30. There will be no teaching in week 42 due to the autumn break in Central Finland.
Course completion and assessment: To successfully complete the course, students are required to attend at least 75% of the Zoom lectures and complete all assigned tasks by the given deadlines. In addition, the course includes two written mid-term tests and a short oral exam, that will be completed in pairs/small groups. Exams and graded assignments are assessed on a pass/fail basis. Participation in the course requires the use of both a microphone and a camera. The Zoom lectures will not be recorded.
From autumn 2024 onwards, the course is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Students who wish to receive a numerical grade (1–5) may request it at the start of the course. The assessment format cannot be changed after the first assignment or exam has been graded.
Prerequisites
French for beginners 1 (5 ECTS) at JAMK or CEFR level A1 (https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/sites/default/files/cefr-en.pdf) or successfully completed French courses 1–2 in a Finnish high school as a B3-language.
