Organisations need Cyber Security professionals

Cyber security touches the lives of all of us as consumers, employees, entrepreneurs and citizens as members of society, regardless of age. Cyber security applies to all companies and organisations, whose business depends on working information technology environments. The constantly automating, digitalising and IT-dependent society needs a functional and secure IT environments.

Cyber security resilience is an organization’s ability to anticipate, respond to, and recover from cyber threats and attacks while maintaining high levels of operational capability and information security. This requires strong situational awareness, enabling the identification and understanding of threats, as well as quick and effective responses to changing conditions.

By studying at Jamk’s Cyber Security Master’s Programme, you learn skills which you can harness to improve organisation’s cyber security readiness and policies. You will become a cyber security professional, who is able to identify cyber security risks, improve security, and strengthen organisation’s cyber security posture in evolving threat landscapes.

Learn how to plan, develop, implement and control technological solutions

During your Cyber Security studies, you will learn about management, technical implementations, auditing, legislation and regulations of cyber security. You know how to plan, develop, implement and control different technological solutions in realistic company environments. You also learn how to test and audit these solutions. During your studies, you train your skills in a safe, realistic cyber environment, and after graduation, you have the knowledge and skills to defend against cyber security attacks in real life.

Afer graduation, you will have the ability for life-long learning professionally, make decisions and communicate effectively as part of a multinational team. You also know how to conduct research ethically.

Scope of the Education

The extent of the education is 60 – 90 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) depending on your previously completed Bachelor's or Master's degree. For example, for someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BEng) it is 60 ECTS, and for someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (BBA in Business Information Technology) it is 90 ECTS.

If you have a BBA degree, you will complete the same 60 ECTS as others, and the missing 30 ECTS will be tailored to your study background and needs.

The education is conducted in English.

Independent studies with contact lessons once a month

As a part-time student, most of your studying is independent work. However, the studies also include contact teaching in Jyväskylä, which will take place during the weekends (approximately 1 weekend per month). By studying part-time, it is possible to pass the degree studies alongside full-time employment within two years.

In some cases, it is also possible to complete the programme in one year as full-time studies. This usually requires some prior knowledge about the topic and readiness to start working on your thesis early on. If you are interested in completing the degree programme in one year, please contact the degree coordinator at the start of your studies.

Studies consist of

  • contact lectures 1 - 2 days once a month in Jyväskylä, mostly on weekends
  • remote studies
  • independent studies
  • group assignments
  • learning in research and development projects and at workplaces.

The assignments are carried out in a safe and realistic cyber environment. The cyber environment used in the studies is constantly updated according to current research and industry developments.

Master’s Thesis, 30 ECTS credits

Master's thesis

Master’s Thesis is a research and development project, which is clearly working life oriented as it is assigned by a company or an organisation. With the Master’s Thesis, you demonstrate your ability to apply current research information to an industry or business-related problem. You also demonstrate your abilities to perform in a job demanding highly specialised knowledge and skills.

Further studies

After graduation, you may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37) and in the school of professional teacher education. Studies can be continued by applying for corresponding post-degree education at universities abroad, for example. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, and working life based continuing education.
