Sport Business Management, Master of Business Administration

By completing the program, students will be able to understand the concepts of leading and managing sport organizations, apply marketing concepts to sports, utilize the sport business intelligence to improve business performance and develop effective strategies for sport business organizations. International top sport management professors take care of the courses together with Finnish experts. These studies give you a great chance to expand your international network.

Study contents

The 90 ECTS programme consists the following modules: Management Studies, Sport business management, Research and development, Electives and Master thesis.

Sport Business Management | 20 ECTS

Sport Business Management modules include areas such as Economic and financial management in sport, Strategic management in sport, Marketing and service design in sport events and Sports law. The modules cover both the national and international aspects of the sport business industry in advanced level.

Management Studies | 10 ECTS

Management studies are compulsory for all the business programmes in Jamk Master’s programme. These studies include Leadership dynamics and Managerial accounting courses, which nicely supplement the sport business studies.

Research and Development | 15 ECTS

The research and development module aims to develop students’ competencies throughout the studies, in particular to conduct individual research in the field of sport. The module consists of Professional development, Research-based development and Research method courses. An essential part of the research and development module is to gain understanding how to use business intelligence in sport context.

Electives | 15 ECTS

Students have the possibility to choose elective courses from this Sport Business Management programme, such as International sport tourism, Sport entrepreneurship and innovations and Sport operations and facility management. Students can also select courses from other Master’s programmes from Jamk School of Business. In addition to these, there are study options in abroad programmes such as EASM Student Seminar or  Jamk Leadership Program in Silicon Valley.

Thesis | 30 ECTS

The thesis is a research and development project which serves working life in the field of sport. It stresses practical application and supports students’ personal career development. The thesis combines the scientific and practical approach, and aims at developing the organizational goals of the selected sport organization.

Jamk tackled everything I was looking for – business isn’t going out of style any time soon, so it’s always a sure way to improve your employability. And the sport aspect of it would help me get back into the hockey business if I wanted to.

In order to apply for the programme students are required to have at least two years of working experience in a relevant field. Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to understand the concepts of leading and managing sport organisations, apply marketing concepts to sports, utilize the sport business intelligence to improve business performance and develop effective strategies for sport business organisations.

Entry requirements: Sport Business Management

  • The requirements for eligibility are bachelor’s degree in the field of business or natural science (BBA), in the field of sport /sport studies, or in the field of hospitality management AND
  •  at least two years (24 months) of work experience in the field of sport, business and administration or tourism and hospitality after the bachelor's degree. 

Application period: 4 – 18 January 2023 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time

Applying for degree programmes conducted in English at universities of applied sciences (UAS) takes place through an online joint application system. 

  • Apply online 4 – 18 January 2023 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time at www.studyinfo.fi.
  • Attach the required enclosures (degree and work certificates and possible pre-assignment) to the online application form by 25 January 2023 by 3.00 p.m. Finnish time (UTC+2) (e.g. as pdf. files).

Entrance examination: Content and pre-reading material

The student selection for Sport Business Management is based on the total score of the entrance examination. All applicants who have demonstrated their eligibility will be invited to the entrance examinations. 

The entrance exam includes a written exam based on a pre-reading material and a separate interview.

The applicant must score at least

  • 15/40 points from the written part (will be arranged on 23 March 2023) and 
  • 20/60 points from the interview (interviews will be organized in April 2023, starting April 2023 the 12th) 

in order to pass the exam and have a chance to be admitted for the degree programme. The total points from entrance examinations are 100 points. Applicant's English language skills will be assessed as a part of the entrance examination, thus, the entrance examination does not include a separate English language test. It is also not necessary to submit any language proficiency certificate.

Results of student selection: Steps for new students

Results are announced in the middle of April at the earliest and on 2 June 2023, at the latest.

  • accept the offer of admission at studyinfo.fi
  • enrol for attendance/non-attendance
  • NON-EU/EEA citizens: pay the tuition fee payment as soon as possible
  • start the residence permit (if needed) application process immediately in May to be able to start your studies in August. The residence permit application process might take time over 2 months, so be in time!
  • Studies will begin in the middle/end of August 2023. Welcome to study with us!
