Project description

The pressure on the
European health care system is increasing considerably: more elderly people and
patients with chronic diseases in need of rehabilitation, a diminishing work
force and health care costs continuing to rise. Improving interprofessional and
person-centred collaboration between health and social care professionals has
been proposed as one solution.

 The
transfer from tertiary education to practice concerning interptofessional
education and collaborative practice (IPECP) in rehabiliation is the central
theme of the INPRO-project. The ultimate aim is to improve functioning, health
and quality of life of patients.

 The main purposes of
the INPRO-project are to:

- improve
interprofessional skills and competence (IPE) of health professionals, both in
education and in practice, lecturers and managers;

- deliver a set of
basic and advanced modules of functioning according to the International
Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) on interprofessional
skills training; and

- strengthen regional
bonds between higher education institutions and rehabilitation centers in order
to pilot IPECP and use promising regional experiences for international
exchange.

In order to work
towards the output and outcomes of the project, the consortium has planned
two-way approach. Starting with and from a solid theoretical base for
interprofessionalism and functioning (WP4 and WP5), sevaral pilots on
interprofessional working in education and in practice will be developed,
tested, adapted and implemented (WP6 and WP7).

Project results

Objective

The growth in the number of elderly persons in European society compared
to the number of adults will lead to a reduced workforce in healthcare. On
average, elderly persons experience a greater demand for complex care due to
the presence of one or more chronic illnesses. Furthermore, healthcare is
undergoing a paradigm shift, moving away from solely treating diseases to
placing greater emphasis on functioning and person-centred care.

Consequently, there is a substantial strain on the healthcare system
across Europe. One viable strategy to address this challenge and continue
enhancing the well-being and quality of life for patients, is to promote
interprofessional collaboration within the teams responsible for patient care. To
achieve interprofessional collaboration and person-centred approaches, a change
in approach was needed from both tertiary education and practice
. We set up the INPRO project, firstly, to improve interprofessional
education and collaborative practice (IPECP), and secondly, to improve the
transfer of future health and social care workforce (students) in education to
the rehabilitation practice by aligning innovative approaches in
interprofessional education and collaboration.

Structure

The INPRO consortium consists of seven partners, four from Higher
Educational Institutes (HEIs) and three rehabilitation practices. Within seven
work packages partners and stakeholders worked on deliverables and created
innovative solutions. Work packages 1-3 are Project management (WP 1), Quality
management (WP 2), and Communication/dissemination (WP 3). Figure 1 reflects
the relationship between the work packages 4-7. IP-competences (WP 4), ICF-functioning
(WP 5), IP-Learning interventions (WP 6), and Student run learning wards (WP 7).
The work package-leaders regularly met during jour fixes and meetings within
work packages. An Advisory board monitored the project twice a year.

Output

During this project, we developed a broad range of materials for interprofessional
education
and practice that are now used in both higher educational
institutes and rehabilitation centres of health and social care professionals.
The materials are available on the website and can be used in HEIs and health
and social care institutes in Europe.
