Project description

Agriculture is undergoing the biggest change in decades. However, development has still been slow, despite the fact that new technologies have proven to take agricultural productivity to a new level by reducing operating costs and enabling growth with smaller inputs (McKinsey 2023).

The need for an co-operation environment has been brought up by the pioneering companies and experts in the field of agrotechnology collaborating with Jamk / the Institute of the Bioeconomy. The absence of an environment slows down the implementation of product development and the market entry of new, more environmentally friendly solutions, as well as their acceptance and implementation.

The need is met by creating a practical environment and a center of expertise, which enables the development of solutions that minimize CO2 emissions and improve economic profitability of arable farming (grass and grain) and promote cooperation opportunities and innovation activities with the help of the smart agriculture startup community and accelerator ecosystem, which so far has been completely absent in Finland.

Project entity (incl. Development and investment projects) is targeted to solve challenges / change pressures of SMEs working at the beginning of the food chain (later: target companies). The work is done in cooperation with the pioneering companies and RDI-organisations in the field of agriculture and agrotechnology.

The Work Packages (WPs) are strongly connected with each other, as the following WP is built on the foundation produced by the previous one. The core of the implementation is formed by
  • WP1: Experimental activity and data generation, generating the ability to collect, utilize and demonstrate data.
  • WP2: Construction of the Farm`s Digital Twin (DT) is based on the collected data of WP1.
  • WP3: is promoting the development of competence and knowledge-based management, utilising DT produced in WP2.
  • WP4: is forming the startup community and partner network, which relies on the outputs of the previous three work packages. WP4 enables the construction of the international center of expertise for smart agriculture located at Bioeconomy campus.

The project entity results an environment for experimentation, demonstration and joint development of smart agriculture. The aim is to promote new precision farming technologies and methods with the help of physical measurement technology and the farm's Digital Twin. This means a physical and virtual co-development environment for collecting data and producing new solutions that renew business activities and improve competitiveness. In addition, the purpose is to increase the ability of experts to collect, utilize and demonstrate data.

Project produces:

  • an operating model that utilizes information produced in a physical and virtual environment and new digital solutions,
  • skills development and knowledge-based management model, which supports data-based decision-making and
  • the international smart agriculture and bioeconomy cooperation network, as well as the accelerator ecosystem, located at the Tarvaala Bioeconomy campus.
