Project description

COMPASS –
Competency-Oriented Outcomes in Midwifery and Nursing Professionalisation and
Academic Systems Strengthening

The overall
objective
is to
contribute to the development and implementation of a competency-based
curriculum for Bachelor-level programmes in Nursing Science and Midwifery
Science at the
Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU) Termez Branch. The project aims to improve the
quality and relevance of education in alignment with international standards
and to strengthen the professional skills of future graduates.

The project is
implemented at TSMU Termez Branch in the
Surxondaryo region, close to the Afghanistan border, where higher education
pathways in nursing and midwifery have been limited or absent. COMPASS responds
to the growing need for well-educated health professionals who can provide
evidence-based, people-centred care across pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care
and primary health care.

The project will be
implemented with Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society (LUBS) being
the lead partner and Jamk University of Applied Sciences (Jamk) the
subcontracting partner.

In practice, the
project focuses on:

1. Modernizing
Theoretical Teaching and Learning Content

This activity focuses on aligning existing curricula with international
standards (ICM, ICN, EFN, EU and WHO) through the development of evidence-based
modules, teaching materials and structured peer review and approval processes.

2. Development
of the Discipline through Research, Ethics, and Professionalization

This activity strengthens nursing and midwifery as academic disciplines
by building faculty capacity in evidence-based practice, integrating ethical
standards into teaching and supporting the development of research
competencies.

3. Competency-Based
Learning in the Skills and Simulation Lab

This
activity establishes competency-based learning and assessment through the
planning and organisation of a Skills and Simulation Lab, development of
simulation scenarios and training faculty in simulation-based teaching methods.

4. Practical Learning through Clinical Placements
and Instruction

This activity ensures high-quality practice-based learning by developing
structured clinical placement frameworks, establishing partnerships with health
care facilities, and training clinical mentors and preceptors.
