New publications detail 18 BioBoosters Hackathon outcomes – network continues to collaborate

The newly released Boosting Circular Transition and BioBoosters Impact Review 2025 publications collect the results of the three-year BioBoosters project, ending as the year 2025 concludes. Boosting Circular Transition provides a comprehensive overview of the project, whereas Impact Review 2025 dives deeper into nine hackathons held between autumn 2024 to spring 2025.

In the two-year piloting, BioBoosters hackathon model was tested in 18 hackathons, where 246 teams from over 20 countries applied to participate.

With 23 RDI and business collaborations launched, the model has demonstrated its ability to solve real business problems and support the green transition. At the same time, it has fostered relationships, spread knowledge, and created platforms where good ideas can grow.

Publications conclude project and reveals success factors

Boosting Circular Transition publication shares the lessons learned, and the conclusions of the three-year project. It dives into the value of hackathons as open innovation process, and delves into the origin, explaining how BioBoosters approach differs from the original concept often associated with rapid software development.

Impact Review 2025 explores nine hackathons organized between autumn 2024 to spring 2025. The publication gathers the findings under three themes: Twin transition - Digitalisation for sustainability, Transition to Biobased industries, Materials & ingredients, and  Valorisation of Biobased Side streams.  The stories reveal the barriers, enablers, and success factors of circular transition on the bioeconomy sectors of the Baltic Sea Region.

The first nine hackathons were covered in the Impact Review 2024.

BioBoosters Network to continue boosting circular transition

The need for resilient, sustainable bioeconomy development in rural areas continues to grow. Collaboration across the regions and organisations remains essential, as shared expertise delivers stronger and more remarkable results.

The BioBoosters network and its partners will keep connecting researchers and companies across borders, even after the project ends. In 2026, the network co-operation will continue under the coordination of Jamk. With the thematic focus on circular and sustainable bioeconomy, the network looks to tap into new funding opportunities as well as to continue the international co-operation in hackathon organisation. The launch of the network co-operation is supported by the shared open innovation expertise, recognized joint brand, and the resources and platforms built during the project.
