Jamk Launches the First Natural Resource Engineering Degree Programme in Finland

The aim of the new engineering programme is to train futuremakers who will develop new technological solutions and apply them to the operating environment of agriculture and forestry, taking also business perspectives into account.

In autumn 2026, Jamk University of Applied Sciences will start a new degree programme in natural resource engineering (jamk.fi). Currently, this programme is not offered anywhere else in Finland. In 2027, the training will start also in English.

The degree programme provides students with a strong foundation in natural sciences, complemented by unique, industry-relevant technical expertise.

“In this degree, studies in information technology, electrical and automation engineering are uniquely combined with expertise in the agriculture and forestry sectors, as well as business development,” says Minna Lappalainen, Director of Jamk’s Institute of Bioeconomy.

The agriculture and forestry sectors play a key role in mitigating climate change, and the technological solutions related to them represent significant and rapidly growing markets. However, developing and implementing new solutions requires a new kind of expertise that merges natural resources and engineering.

Finland’s only degree programme in Natural Resource Engineering is designed to meet this need.

Jamk’s new engineering programme will produce highly skilled professionals tailored to the needs of businesses, creating growth and development opportunities for smart bioeconomy and agrotechnology-based enterprises. According to Lappalainen, the programme has been designed in close collaboration with industry stakeholders.

“We have gathered extensive information directly from companies in the field about the skills and knowledge needed in working life,” Lappalainen adds.

Expertise in the Natural Resources Field is an Advantage in this Engineering Career

In the future, companies will increasingly need professionals who can develop solutions to global challenges.

“There is a growing need for experts who not only master the necessary technologies but also understand how to use natural resources efficiently, intelligently, and sustainably. I am convinced that there will be strong demand in the labour market for those who have completed a bachelor’s degree in natural resource engineering in the future,” says Tommi Terävä, Business Development Manager at Valtra.

Future natural resource engineers will be in demand in technology industries, natural resource companies, design and consulting firms, and research organisations. Their roles may involve, for example, developing technical solutions and processes, consulting, or working in sales and marketing.

“This field requires a combination of diverse skills and the ability to understand broad and complex systems. A graduating engineer must possess technical expertise, but also an understanding of business, markets, data sources, legislation, and how decision-making works among partners,” explains Jyrki Hyyrönmäki, Chief Product Officer at DataSpace Europe.

You can apply for the programme in the joint application process in spring 2026, with 30 study places available. The programme will start for the first time in August 2026 in Finnish and will be conducted as a multiform learning. In 2027, the training will start in English.

Ari Latvala, a lecturer with a strong background in engineering as well as agriculture and forestry, will start as the degree coordinator.
