Objectives

The purpose of this course is to deepen your understanding in tourism industry and especially in leisure events. You will understand the effects of the events on tourism. You will understand the special features of leisure events and learn the planning and implementation process of responsible leisure events both in theory and in practice. By identifying the international structure of leisure events, and different operators both in international and regional level, it is easier for you to make career plans within event industry.

Learning objectives
You understand the role of leisure events as part of leisure travel and event industry. You identify the terminology used in event industry. You identify operators and service providers within leisure events. You know the phases and critical success factors of planning and managing leisure events and apply them in practice. You know how to make responsible choices in event planning.

Implementation methods

The teaching methodology employs experiential learning. This means you will learn the skill set required to create and the experiential aspect is that students will collaborate in teams to develop their own plan for an event that excites them. The course encompasses the skill sets of: Idea Generation, Mind's Eye Modelling; Beachhead Targeting and Segmentation; External and Internal Environmental Analysis; Goal Setting; Event Positioning; Integrated Marketing Communications and Sales, Risk Management, Operations Planning, Basic budgeting, as well as Sustainability and Responsibility aspects.

The course will be implemented as classroom teaching on Jamk's Rajakatu campus. This course is offered on a face-to face-basis only. The full schedule with the topics will be posted on the course Moodle shell and discussed at the first contact lecture. Prerequisites: You understand the concepts related to service operations and have basic customer competence. You understand the general concepts and phenomena related to tourism.

When enrolling, please primarily use the suomi.fi service for identification or if you have HAKA university credentials, you can use those. If you do not have Finnish bank credentials or HAKA credentials, skip the identification. Also notice that you cannot enroll in Open University courses if you are a degree student at Jamk (enrollment in Peppi).
