Why publish?

• Publishing is a part of an expert’s work and helps make the results of their work visible.
• Publications are an important tool for promoting the expertise of JAMK’s specialists.
• Publications are a mark of high-quality RDI operations.
• A publication is also a merit to its maker.
• Publications also have an effect on JAMK’s funding.

How can I choose the right publishing channel and where can I publish?

When choosing a publishing channel, it is important to take into account the target audience as well as the quality level of the channel. The author selects the suitable publishing channel for their article. When selecting a publisher, try to choose a reliable and high-quality publisher from your own field. If you are not familiar with the journal or publisher, it is recommended to ensure their reliability in advance.

Publishing channels for the staff are:
• JAMK’s own serial publications and e-journals
• professional journals
• scientific publications
• event publications (e.g. for conferences)
• newspapers
• videos, blogs and learning materials

Choose Open Access

JAMK has committed to following the principles of open science, which means that the field’s Open Access publishers are favoured, when choosing a suitable publisher.

Open Access (open science) refers to the public accessibility of research publications and materials. Open Access publications can be freely read, copied, printed and linked online by everyone without any charge. Open Access publishing is done through open access e-journals or as parallel publications in publication archives.

Don´t forget self archiving – It´s quickly and easily done!

Parallel publication ensures that scientific publications are accessible to the public. By the Rector’s decision (October/2016), all the scientific publications by JAMK personnel will be parallel published on the open repository of the universities of applied sciences, i.e. Theseus, unless this is expressly prohibited by the publisher. Publications that have been openly published trough Open Access channels should also be parallel published. JAMK Publication Services will help you with parallel publishing – link to the instructions below.

Open science benefits everyone, so more and more financiers have started to demand open access to the publications. Most science publishers have recognised the educational organisations’ need for parallel publishing and allow the parallel publishing of a certain version of the article within a delay time determined by them.

Open Access publishing models

Open publication means that the entire publication is online, free-of-charge, and accessible to all. Publishers offer various Open Access publishing models. The notable difference between them is whether there is a fee for making the publication accessible:

 Green Open Access

  • The article is published in a traditional, subscribed scientific journal, the publisher of which allows parallel publishing of a certain version of the article published in their journal on a publication archive open to all (such as the Theseus Open Repository of the Universities of Applied Sciences).
  • The author is not charged for the parallel publishing.
  • The publisher can require a certain delay time, i.e. a so-called embargo time, before making a parallel published copy available.
  • JAMK recommends its staff to choose Green Open Access publishers for their articles.

Most science publishers and publications follow the Green Open Access principle, which means that they allow the parallel publishing of a certain version of the research article (usually the final draft) on the open publication archive of the researcher’s own institute of higher education, at the latest after a certain time delay, i.e. a so-called embargo time.

 Gold Open Access

The journal and the articles are freely accessible and free-of-charge to the readers, but the publisher will charge the authors of the articles (their organisation) for an APD, article processing charge. These processing charges may have been included in the project’s research expenses, for example.

 Hybrid Open Access

Only some of the articles in the scientific publication are freely accessible and a separate fee is charged. The publisher will charge both author fees and subscriptions from the readers. Publishing through publications applying the hybrid model is not recommended.

Publishing agreement with a publisher

The article’s authors will sign a publishing agreement with the publisher, usually as the copyright holders. When making the publishing agreement with the publisher, the author of the article should attempt to keep the rights to parallel publish the publication in the repository of their organisation (Theseus for JAMK). Most publishers will allow this, with certain conditions.

The agreement will define:

  • the article version, the parallel publishing of which the publisher will allow. Usually the allowed version is the final draft of the post-print draft, i.e. the latest draft written by the author (that has gone through the possible peer review), which does not yet have the publisher’s layout, such as their logo or page numbers.

  • the delay time (embargo) the publisher usually sets for parallel publishing, during which the parallel publication must not be published. However, the parallel published file can be saved into the repository right away and set to become public after the determined embargo (in JAMK, this is done by the Publication Services after they have received the file to be saved from the author).

NOTE! In JAMK, all scientific articles need to be parallel published unless expressly prohibited by the publisher.
