Purchasing is all about people knowledge and good deals – Galina studied Logistics at JAMK

"Studying logistics and purchasing helps you to understand how companies operate, develop and make money from a practical point of view. If you feel you have an analytical mind, but you would like to learn how different businesses and industries work - you should go for it. It is a good school of life - you are provided with supportive teachers, materials and infrastructure. It really depends on you what you make out of it. Just like in life."

Galina Gorshkova studied Logistics at JAMK and now works in an international purchasing department. Working as an internal consultant, has taught her a lot about purchasing marketing services, managing difficult situations and people knowledge. Logistics studies at JAMK guided her to make her own decisions and to be autonomous, which are both very important in work and in life.

"I work now in Nike, global procurement, brand & marketplace team. My job can be best compared to an internal consultancy. I am helping my business stakeholders to make strategic priorities come true by managing relationships with core European suppliers. Purchasing in international environment is about being able to listen, finding the right approach for the diverse stakeholders to solve problems in an efficient manner.

I started studying at JAMK when I was 17. I have never been abroad before or met any foreigner. Speaking new language and working in culturally diverse teams is harder than you may think. That is where JAMK helped me a lot. In my current job, I must be an excellent communicator. I wouldn’t have succeed if I didn’t have those tough moments during my studies.

I would say the main reason I went for JAMK was that I wanted to get more practical understanding of the world. Education system in Russia is very theoretical. You can know all the formulas, but unless you wish to build a purely academic career, you need to know how to apply your knowledge. Business doesn’t really care how much you’ve studied before, business cares how good and fast you can solve problems.

My memories from my time studying at JAMK are good. Everything was new. At my high school back home, I was told what to do: “You need to read from chapter 4 to chapter 6, and answer questions 1 to 10”. At JAMK, I had to learn how to make my own decisions – to choose the electives, to do research by myself. Learning this was painful, but very important. It was also fun! Imagine: you are in a sweet little Finnish town hanging out with people from literally every part of the world!
