Project description
REMAP: Strengthening Research Management Capacity in Universities of Applied Sciences

1.9.2026-31.8.2029

The REMAP project strengthens the capacity and support services for applied research management in Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS).

The project contributes to the objectives of the European Research Area (ERA) by enhancing the competencies, visibility, and career pathways of Research Management and Administration (RMA) professionals, particularly in countries and organisations where research support structures are still developing.

Universities of Applied Sciences as Drivers of Applied Research:

Universities of Applied Sciences play a key role in applied research, innovation, and regional development. However, their research and development activities are often supported by small research teams and limited administrative resources. Research management professionals are crucial for securing research funding, building international partnerships, and supporting the planning, implementation, and impact of research projects.
In many organisations, research management functions operate with limited resources, which can constrain research growth, competitiveness, and innovation potential. REMAP addresses these challenges by developing practical and scalable solutions.

The project brings together six European Universities of Applied Sciences (ViA, STPUAS, IPS, JAMK, Saxion, and UPT), which collaborate with the University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN) and EURASHE to develop and pilot new approaches and support structures for research management.

Key Project Outputs:

The project will deliver:
•    A European competence framework and role model for research management professionals
•    Flexible training and mentoring pathways for research management experts
•    The digital REMAP Hub hosted on the ARENA platform
•    Recommendations and practical models to support career development in research management
•    Policy recommendations for strengthening research capacity in Universities of Applied Sciences
The project outputs are designed to be widely transferable across Europe, supporting research quality, internationalisation, and active participation in the development of the European Research Area.

JAMK's Role in the Project:

JAMK is responsible for designing and piloting a training programme for professionals involved in applied research and research support activities.

Funding:

The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme under the WIDERA initiative
