Project description

The project addresses the need to find sustainable solutions for the condition and reuse of former peat production areas and failed old swamp drainage areas. The aim is to improve the business skills and restoration expertise of professionals, students, and young people in the forestry, nature, and construction sectors, so they can start new businesses in nature conservation work. This promotes youth employment and regional vitality, and supports Finland's environmental policy goals.

Project results

The first round of the training pilots implemented within the project was organised in spring 2026. The pilots focused on strengthening expertise related to forest nature-based business, forest biodiversity, and ecological restoration. The pilots attracted a good number of participants during the spring.

A series of field visits was also launched in the spring. The visits are carried out in cooperation whit the sister project  EHTO. During the spring, participants visited restoration sites togethet whit the site planners and became familiar whit the restoration plans prepared for the areas. The field visits provide an opportunity to followthe restoration process in practise and deepen restoration-related expertise in real-life environment.

In the autumn, the training pilots will continue. The pilot focusing biodiversity and restoration expertise will begin on 18 September, while the forest-nature based business pilot will strat on 20 October. The series of field visits wil also continue. Information on upcoming visits will be provited separately as the schedules for restaration work at the sites are confirmed.
