AI4HeavyMobility – Hydrogen and Sustainable Alternative Power Sources in the Transformation of Heavy-Duty Transport

The AI4HeavyMobility project develops AI-assisted solutions for assessing alternative powertrain options in heavy-duty transport and supporting transport system planning. The Jyväskylä region serves as the project's development platform, where data-based knowledge is produced to support decision-making by companies, cities and infrastructure operators. The aim is to accelerate the adoption of low-emission heavy-duty transport and support sustainable and competitive urban development.

The AI4HeavyMobility project promotes the transition of heavy-duty transport towards sustainable alternative powertrains by utilising artificial intelligence, data analytics and new digital solutions. The project develops operating models that enable the suitability of hydrogen, electricity, biogas and other low-emission powertrains to be compared for different transport needs. It also produces knowledge to support decisions on vehicle fleets, routes and infrastructure.

The project collects and combines vehicle, telematics, infrastructure and operating environment data, and develops an AI-assisted analysis and reporting tool for logistics operators. The project results will support business competitiveness, the transition to alternative powertrains and the deployment of low-emission heavy-duty transport.

Jyväskylä serves as the project's development platform. The region's logistical location, hydrogen refuelling station, hydrogen buses and the logistics hub formed by national roads 4, 9, 13 and 18 provide an excellent environment for developing new powertrains and data-driven solutions. The project strengthens the position of Jyväskylä and Central Finland as forerunners in sustainable transport, the hydrogen economy and AI-enabled industry renewal.

Objectives

The project aims to:

  • promote the transition of heavy-duty transport to low-emission powertrains
  • develop an AI-assisted operating model for data analytics and reporting to meet the needs of logistics
  • produce knowledge to support the planning of hydrogen, electric and gas infrastructure
  • strengthen companies' capabilities to use artificial intelligence and data in decision-making
  • support the City of Jyväskylä's sustainable urban development goals and the development of the renewing industry ecosystem
  • create an RDI and learning environment for Jamk and regional actors that can be utilised beyond the project.


Funding

The project is part of the implementation of the City of Jyväskylä's ecosystem agreement for sustainable urban development. The project is Co-funded by the European Union (ERDF), and other funders include the City of Jyväskylä and Jamk University of Applied Sciences. The project period is 1 September 2026–31 August 2029.
