Diploma of Higher Education was a pilot project carried out in Finland by JAMK University of Applied Sciences in 2013-2016. It developed short cycle higher education in Finland.

Diploma of Higher Education ("Korkeakouludiplomi") was a national pilot project which aimed to develop structured competence modules that consists of parts of degrees. The pilot investigated the needs of working life for new modules narrower in scope than existing degrees and how they best meet the needs of students with various backgrounds.

JAMK was the only UAS in Finland to be granted an appropriation for the pilot by the Ministry of Education and Culture. JAMK’s task was to build a model of Diploma of Higher Education. The pilot was proposed by Education Development Group, appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Purpose of the project

  • To strengthen extensive competence modules in the offering of the Open Studies of Applied Sciences
  • To determine what kind of university-level competence and modules narrower in scope than an entire degree in various fields are needed by customers and work communities to develop their operations
  • To build and further specify the roles and customer relationships of educational institute, university and corporate partners
  • To carry out the first pilot education projects in the fields of business administration, technology and health care and social services
  • To publish a follow-up and assessment report.
Diploma
of higher education
  • The students do not need earlier post-secondary education or any specific earlier education, and the studies are open to all.
  • With the diploma, students can complement their existing skills or gain completely new competence.
  • The education does not award a degree, but the students get a diploma.
  • 1,5-2 years, 60 ECTS credits, 10 € per ECTS credit
  • Educations are carried out as flexible multiform studies, which can be also completed alongside work.
  • Four pilot groups: Agricultural entrepreneur business competence, gerontological rehabilitation, HR and financial specialist and purchasing specialist.
  • First student finished their studies in December 2015 or in January 2016. New diploma studies will start in autumn 2016.
  • Studies can be incorporated into the Bachelor’s degree later.
