Vocational Teacher Education provides the pedagogical qualification for teaching your subject in Finland. Studying in the flexible post-degree programme takes usually 1–2 years.

Teaching is a challenging yet rewarding career choice for professionals from different fields of expertise. Studying in JAMK's Teacher Education College is designed to meet the needs of adult students: the mode of study is flexible, multiform and each student is able to tailor their studies.

At JAMK's Teacher Education College you can study in our internationally oriented group. We have provided vocational teacher education studies in English since 1994.

If your Finnish is fluent, you can also apply to one of our Finnish-language study groups based in various parts of Finland or the web-based teacher education programme.

Teacher Studies

The Vocational Teacher Education programme consists of 60 credits (corresponding to one year of full-time study) and includes:

  • basic studies in educational sciences
  • vocational pedagogy studies
  • teaching practice
  • other studies.

The curriculum of the programme is based on four interconnected competence areas: facilitating learning, developing the educational environment, cooperation and interaction and continuous learning.

More information about the main elements and aims of our programme is available at our Study Guide.

Mode of study

  • Part-time, multimodal studying while working with a possibility to full-time studies.
  • Studies require a good level of English, both spoken and written.
  • Length of studies is from 1 to 2 academic years depending on the student’s background and individual learning plan.
  • Studies include working in learning circles (4-6 students in areal groups), e-learning activities, meetings in Jyväskylä and webinars, independent work and teaching practice.

Studying in our Vocational Teacher Education programme is very flexible. Many of our adult students continue working during the studies. The group will gather to two or three day seminars in Jyväskylä approximately three times per semester.

The length of supervised study varies from 1 to 2 academic years depending on the student’s background and individual learning plan. The education is offered as part-time multimodal studies with a possibility to full-time studies as well. In compliance with the law, the students have the right to study for three years. These standard times are normally sufficient to include the eventuality of any unscheduled interruptions in the studies.
