Rural Symbiosis
Project sponsors
RuralSymbiosis addresses a critical challenge in the Baltic Sea region: the underutilization of agricultural and forestry side-streams. Although biomass residues and by-products hold significant potential, small rural enterprises often lack the scale, logistics, and cooperation needed to valorize them. Traditional, centralized industrial symbiosis and innovation models do not fit the dispersed and seasonal realities of rural biomass, leaving valuable resources treated as low-value waste.
Connecting sides-streams from multiple bio-based businesses in the area requires coordination as well as logistic and business models adapted to the local conditions. Individual companies cannot do this alone. However, the rural connectors – municipalities, regions, business support organizations – often lack the capacity to lead the development of rural symbiosis for resilient and sustainable rural bioeconomy. To move from strategies to practice, public authorities need the capacity to identify, assess and support feasible rural symbiosis opportunities workable in their region. They need lessons and examples on sustainable business models creating high value from side-streams in rural conditions. They need methods to initiate and build dialogue on rural symbiosis, to bridge research and business know-how, and to support access to funding for process piloting and product development. They need to unite the regional actors to shared mission. In short, they need to create conditions where the symbiosis can take root and grow.
RuralSymbiosis addresses these barriers by demonstrating practical symbiosis models through study visits, stakeholder workshops, open innovation events. The project mainly targets regional authorities, development agencies, research centres, and business support organisations. The activities of the project strengthen the capacity of these regional actors to support creating rural symbiosis models in their region.
The key outputs from the project include
- The Rural Symbiosis Toolbox: a set of actionable methods to foster cooperation, generate innovative valorization solutions, and strengthen rural economies
- Regional rural symbiosis roadmaps for each participating region, which will provide tailored guidance to embed project outcomes into long-term regional strategies, ensuring lasting impact beyond the project's lifetime
