Project description

Active and Thriving Jyväskylä Higher Education Community

Active and Thriving Jyväskylä Higher Education Community is a development project coordinated by JAMK University of Applied Sciences and implemented in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä/uMove, the Student Union of JAMK (JAMKO), the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY), and Liikunnan Riemu ry.

The project aims to strengthen the physically active culture of the newly established Jyväskylä higher education consortium and to promote students' physical activity, wellbeing, sense of community, and study ability.

The project addresses key challenges faced by higher education students, including low levels of daily physical activity, prolonged sedentary behaviour, feelings of loneliness, and the decline in physical activity often associated with transitions in studies. Particular attention is given to reaching less active students and supporting their participation through accessible, low-threshold activities.

Key activities include:

  • Designing and piloting a shared study module for the entire higher education consortium that promotes physical activity, connection with nature, wellbeing, and community building, while also serving as the first step in the physical activity counselling pathway.
  • Developing new student-centred opportunities for physical activity, events, sports sessions, and participation pathways.
  • Strengthening teaching staff's competence in active and functional pedagogy through a digital badge programme and workshops.
  • Exploring possibilities for integrating physical activity counselling into academic studies.
  • Establishing permanent operating models, such as a Liikkuva opiskelu (Active Student) team, a coordinator network, and shared practices that make physical activity a natural part of both study and working life.

The project is expected to increase students' everyday physical activity, enhance wellbeing and community engagement, and embed physical activity-promoting practices into the long-term operations of the higher education consortium. As a result, an accessible and inclusive study culture will be created, where movement is a natural part of both campus-based and remote learning.

The project's target group consists of approximately 25,000 students within the Jyväskylä higher education consortium, as well as higher education staff.
