Gaming is often viewed simply as a form of entertainment or a way to pass time. However, modern gaming experiences have evolved into much more than recreational activities. Through collaborative gameplay, strategic thinking, and social interaction, gaming can contribute positively to mental health, emotional wellbeing, communication skills, and teamwork. Participation in the Gaming skills for studies bootcamp at Jamk University of Applied Sciences provided an opportunity to explore these benefits firsthand through a combination of digital games, mindfulness activities, and group discussions focused on mental health and wellbeing.

The four-day bootcamp, held at the Jamk Main Campus in Rajakatu, brought together nursing students from diverse cultural backgrounds including Kenya, Nigeria, and China. The purpose of the bootcamp was to learn through experience how gamification could support mental health and improve wellbeing while also encouraging social connection and personal development. Throughout the sessions, participants engaged in different games and activities that promoted collaboration, patience, communication, emotional regulation, and critical thinking.

The experience demonstrated that gaming can be much more than competition or entertainment. It can create meaningful social bonds, reduce stress, improve mood, and encourage personal reflection. Through different types of digital games and several card games, participants discovered how gaming environments can positively influence emotional wellbeing and interpersonal relationships.

The Gaming Environment and Learning Experience

The bootcamp was hosted in a modern gaming arena equipped with high-quality gaming systems, expansive monitors, and immersive gaming setups. The atmosphere was welcoming and supportive, allowing participants to feel comfortable regardless of their previous gaming experience. Healthy snacks and breaks between sessions contributed to a relaxed and enjoyable environment that encouraged both learning and social interaction.

Each day began with presentations and discussions about mental health topics such as self-awareness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, communication, and decision-making. These sessions helped participants understand the relationship between emotions, stress management, and everyday wellbeing. The theoretical discussions were followed by practical gaming sessions where participants could apply teamwork and communication skills in interactive settings.

For many participants, the experience challenged existing assumptions about gaming. Some initially viewed games as unimportant or purely recreational. However, through participation in collaborative gameplay and reflective discussions, gaming gradually became recognized as a valuable tool for emotional support, stress relief, and social connection.

Gaming and Mental Health

The goal of the program was to help participants understand the positive and negative factors affecting their wellbeing, and to learn new ways to enhance the of the positive factors and reduce the negative ones.  A major focus of the bootcamp was understanding the relationship between gaming and mental health. Discussions throughout the program explored how gaming can be used reduce stress, improve mood, and encourage emotional expression when used in healthy and balanced ways.

The activities demonstrated that gaming could create opportunities for social connection, especially among individuals from different cultural and social backgrounds. Collaborative games encouraged participants to communicate openly, support one another, and work toward shared goals. These interactions contributed to a sense of belonging and reduced feelings of isolation.

Gaming also provided an effective form of relaxation. Immersive environments, engaging challenges, and humorous experiences allowed participants to temporarily disconnect from academic pressures and everyday stress. The inclusion of mindfulness activities further reinforced the importance of balancing recreation with emotional awareness and self-care. Through collaborative and interactive experiences, participants developed communication skills, teamwork, patience, decision-making abilities, and emotional awareness.

Games such as Valheim, Golf with Your Friends, and GeoGuessr showed that gaming environments can encourage relaxation, creativity, critical thinking, and friendship. The program also challenged common stereotypes about gaming by revealing its potential to support wellbeing and strengthen interpersonal relationships. As future healthcare professionals, participants also recognized the value of activities that promote emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and stress management alongside physical health.

Overall, the experience was both educational and enjoyable. It created an environment where participants could learn, connect, and reflect on the positive role gaming can play in everyday life. The bootcamp highlighted the growing importance of gamification not only as entertainment but also as a valuable resource for mental health, collaboration, and community building.
