May 27 | Spaceborne insights for climate resilient agriculture and food security - Keynote by Patrick Selänniemi, Specialist, Kuva Space

Climate change will dramatically impact the available land for agriculture within the next 50 years; many historically important areas for food production are at risk of decreased yield or total unfeasibility for food production due to water stress, extreme temperatures, soil degradation, or desertification. Furthermore, changes in regional climates open avenues for pathogens to spread to new areas, increasing the vulnerability of major and minor crops.

Hyperspectral technology, with its ability to capture detailed spectral signatures of manmade and natural materials, offers unparalleled insights into soil health, crop conditions, and yield forecasts. By leveraging these insights with high temporal resolution, we can empower agro companies and farmers with precise and timely data to enhance crop resilience, optimize resource use, and help mitigate the impacts of climate fluctuations.

Through extensive hyperspectral satellite constellations and AI-powered analytics, Kuva Space offers daily global insights on sustainable food production practices and helps regional and global entities better manage food security. This speech will explore cutting-edge applications of hyperspectral data and highlight the collaborative efforts needed to integrate these spaceborne technologies into sustainable agricultural practices. Through innovation and cooperation, we aim to be an important piece of a large puzzle to build a resilient food system capable of feeding the global population while preserving environmental health.

May 27 | Future clean power sources and fuels for agriculture machinery - Keynote by Jarno Ratia, Director, Sales & Marketing and emission compliance, AGCO Power

Today agrimachinery power production is highly based on use of internal combustion engines and fossil fuels. With future fuels and power technologies AGCO Power aims to reduce farming CO2 footprint. Already today, there are variety of possible technologies that can support CO2 reduction. Each technology and fuel have its advantages and disadvantages when ranking best fit for agricultural sector. Current regulation does not regulate GHG emissions from engines and there is no industry level roadmap for future machine standards or technologies - which keeps development playground open. In my presentation focus will be in machine level power generation options and will bring up the highlights of most promising solutions as we see them today.

May 28 | Less is more if you do it properly - Keynote by Esko Valtaoja, Scientist & Professor Emeritus of Astronomy

Saving the planet and ourselves with technology, or, Less is more if you do it properly"

We face a double challenge for this century. We must save ourselves, lift humankind up to a shared global well-being. The only just goal is to provide everybody with standards of living similar to those now enjoyed in Finland and other highly developed nations. This means increasing the global wealth by roughly a factor of five.

We must also save the planet. The amounts of energy, matter and other resources we take yearly from Earth are not sustainable. They must be decreased by at least a factor of two from the present levels, as demonstrated, for example, by the Earth Overshoot Day index.

[Pessimists claim that these two goals are contradictory and impossible to achieve. Therefore, they argue, we must give up our dreams of a better future, and in the worst case prepare for an ecological Armageddon. Growth is an ugly word that dooms the planet.

But this is not true.] Our capacity of doing more with less, with the help of new technology-driven innovations and methods, has been attested time and time again. In agriculture, as in everything else,  better knowledge, better data and better technology can reduce our need for energy and matter to an almost unlimited degree.

To take just one example, why produce all our food in the traditional wasteful manner, when we can make protein out of thin air and a bit of sunshine? With knowledge, data and technology we can save both the planet and ourselves.
