First Construction Site Managers Graduate from Jamk University of Applied Sciences

The first graduates of the Construction Site Manager (UAS) degree at Jamk celebrated their graduation in December 2025. The programme has been available at Jamk since January 2023. Despite challenges in the construction sector, employment prospects for skilled construction site managers remain strong.

The first students in the Construction Site Manager (UAS) degree programme began their studies at Jamk in January 2023, and in December 2025 the first graduates celebrated the completion of their degrees.

The standard duration of the degree is 3.5 years, so the current graduates completed their studies six months ahead of schedule. Senior Lecturer Petri Pelkonen, who is responsible for the programme, expects that many students will complete their degrees within the standard timeframe by spring 2026.

Practical experience is an asset in managerial roles

The construction sector has faced a downturn in recent years, which has also been reflected in application numbers. However, Pelkonen remains confident that construction site managers will find employment.

“I believe the sector has reached its lowest point and is now starting to recover, and many of our graduates will enter that market,” Pelkonen says, adding that many students are already employed during their studies.

The Construction Site Manager (UAS) degree is offered in a flexible, part-time format at Jamk, and work experience in the construction field is required for admission. This allows many students to complete their studies alongside work or move into more responsible roles already during their studies.

According to Pelkonen, there is a shortage of skilled site supervisors. Since graduates already have practical on-site experience, they are in demand in the labour market.

Central Finland needs site management expertise

The Construction Site Manager degree programme was developed at Jamk in collaboration with working life partners and responds to labour market needs in the construction sector, as many professionals will retire in the coming years. According to Sami Kantanen, Director of the Institute of Renewing Industry, the programme is a significant and timely response to the long-standing shortage of experienced site management professionals in Central Finland.

“The programme has been developed to meet a clear need expressed by regional companies and organisations. It is great that we can respond to the demand for skilled professionals through this education. Graduates – both now and in the future – have developed their expertise to meet the requirements of modern construction,” Kantanen explains.

Currently, around 100 students are studying for the Construction Site Manager (UAS) degree at Jamk and will soon be ready to meet the challenges of working life.
