Highway to MBA

"Biggest limitations lie in people’s own attitudes: if you want to achieve something, you – and only you – are the person who can make it happen. Once started it was easy to stay motivated: the lecturers were excellent and the assignments challenging."

Ever since graduating with the BBA degree – also from JAMK – becoming an MBA was my long-term dream. However, balancing with work and family life was challenging enough and I felt I didn’t quite have time for anything else. Nonetheless, the dream always stayed somewhere at the back of my mind and I knew that I was going to make it true someday.

As a busy mum of three, the time was never going to be right. On nursing leave, I decided it was as right as it was ever going to get! That is when I took my first steps towards my long-term dream and started my studies at JAMK in the Master’s Degree Programme of International Business Management.

On the fast lane

It turned out that my steps were more like jumps: I found myself taking first and second year courses all at once and starting the thesis process, too. I completed the courses and wrote my Master’s Thesis altogether in approximately 15 months. Needless to say, it was challenging. However, when it comes to study and work, I am highly ambitious and when I get into something, I get into it fully, intensively and effectively. Biggest limitations lie in people’s own attitudes: if you want to achieve something, you – and only you – are the person who can make it happen.

Motivation is easy to find

My biggest challenge was the lack of time. As a full-time mum, I did not have time to study after work – my ‘work’ went on 24/7! I did most of the studying when the kids went to bed, and thankfully with the help of my family I was able to attend the classes knowing that the kids were well looked after. As an adult student, there were not too many classes. Instead, we had a lot of assignments to do at home.

Systematically, I went through them task by task, all the time having a clear vision. I have always been the kind of person who likes to see things done. It was easy to stay motivated: the lecturers were excellent and the assignments challenging.

The MBA programme provided an excellent opportunity to deepen my knowledge and strengthen my competences. Looking back, I am very pleased. I feel confident with the skills I have achieved. Furthermore, I am proud of my qualifications and feel that I have a lot to offer as a professional. Most importantly, I made my dream come true.
