Emili Losier - an aspiring opera singer

"JAMK had a great music reputation when I first went there. The classical side has many good teachers and a special interest in choir music."

I am Emili Losier, Finnish Canadian aspiring opera singer. I graduated 2010 from JAMK bachelor degree programme in music and 2011 from specialization studies.

I came from Canada in 2005 thinking about coming to JAMK and learning about the Finnish culture and language. I moved to Jyväskylä and started in 2006.

When I was about to graduate from specialization studies I applied to Sibelius academy to their new opera program. Since I graduated in Jyväskylä in 2011 I have participated in three operas in the Sibelius academy, multiple master classes, Savonlinna opera festival as a choir member and soloist, soloist for Lutakko's 100 year anniversary gala concert, as well as participated in Sibelius competition and most recently made it to the finals in the Lappeenranta competition and was awarded 2nd place.

JAMK had a great music reputation when I first went there. The classical side had many good teachers and a special interest in choir music. The last winner of the Lappeenranta competition also came from JAMK so I would hope that the school is pushing to keep classical singing alive there. Through lied class, core repeteur classes, baroque seminar, choir or ensemble singing as well as master classes, I felt I got a very good start to my classical music education towards my goal as a performing classical musician.

As a tip for new students I would say to work hard and ask for what you need. If you never ask you never get the opportunity to hear a yes or a no.
