Entering Finland

Start the visa/residence permit application procedure

Non-EU/EEA students need a student residence permit to study in Finland. The residence permits are granted by the Finnish Immigration Service. You can find detailed information and advice on the residence permit requirements and procedures on the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) website.

Please note that Jamk neither processes the visa/residence permit applications nor can give any advice or guidance regarding the application process. Please contact the Finnish Immigration Service in all matters regarding residence permits.

  • You can begin the student residence permit application online at Enterfinland.fi. You must personally visit the VFS office/ Finnish Embassy for biometric enrolment as part of this process. Please follow the instructions in Enter Finland carefully and you will know what to do next. Start your residence permit process as soon as possible, carefully following the immigration authorities' instructions and regulations, so that you can receive your permit without any interruptions before your studies begin. The visa/residence permit application process might take 3 months, so be on time! Non-compliance with required instructions/information can result in disappointing outcomes.

  • You can request to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System by ticking a box at the beginning of your residence permit or residence card application. This way you can easily get a Finnish personal identity code, which is needed in our student registration system. Having a personal identity code also facilitates, for example, payment of salaries, banking, and access to health care. If you don’t do it in the application, you need to visit the local register office in Jyväskylä after you have attended the orientation at Jamk.

  • In case you need some experience-based information on the topics mentioned above, please contact Coordinator/Jamk Alumni Tutor Ms. Uma Kumari (uma.kumari(at)jamk.fi)

Cost of Living in Finland

You must have enough funds for your personal use to cover the living costs in Finland during your entire stay.

Make sure that you have a minimum of EUR 560 (for one person) at your disposal every month to be able to pay for your accommodation, food, and other needs.

Please note that finding a part-time job to help cover your living expenses depends on several factors including personal efforts and job market situation, among others, and it may take several months before you may even get it. Thus, you need to make sure that you really have the required funds for the duration of your residence permit in your bank account. This will ensure that you can focus on your studies, which is the first and foremost reason for your stay in Finland, without having to worry about finances.

The minimum monthly amount of funds for your living expenses as required by the Finnish immigration officials is EUR 560 per person. However, the average monthly spending can easily be in the range of €600 - €800 per person (rent included in the amount). Naturally, depending on your own interests and spending habits this amount is subject to change.

On arrival at Jamk, you will receive a discount card for meals. With this card, you get a student discount at the Jamk restaurants. The lunch price with the discount is 6,27€ (subject to change yearly).

In order for you to have a pleasant stay in Finland, we highly recommend you have the required funds for the whole duration of your studies.

Income requirement for non-EU/EEA residents

Students from non-EU/EEA countries must prove their sufficient income as a part of the residence permit application. The Finnish Immigration Service has determined that a student must have at least 560 euros/month (6 720 euros/year) at their disposal.

More information on the income requirement can be found on the Finnish Immigration Service website.
