JAMK part of consortium winning World Bank funded project in Kazakhstan

JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) have agreed on co-operation in teacher education reform with the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh Ministry of Education signed an agreement in late 2020 with a consortium led by Häme University of Applied Sciences, whose partners are JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Nazarbayev University from Kazakhstan. The purpose of the project is to develop curricula and structures in teacher education.

The 26-month project is part of a World Bank-funded project that is aiming to modernise Kazakhstan's education system, to improve the quality of primary and secondary education and, in general, educational opportunities in the country. The project was won in an international tender in 2020.

The project includes four overlapping stages starting from legislative review and analysis of current practices in initial teacher education, as well as international benchmarking, improving the content and form of initial teacher education, curricula revisioning, and finally, faculty training in the beneficiary universities. The long-term objective of the project is the improved quality and relevance of initial teacher education for teachers working in secondary education, and who are responsible for implementing the newly reformed secondary education curricula.

JAMK School of Professional Teacher Education provides several experts to the project.

JAMK and Häme University of Applied Sciences have been working together in Kazakhstan since 2012 and have carried out projects improving nursing education and the quality, availability and efficiency of health services in Kazakhstan. Now, the new project focusing on teacher education can be seen as a continuation of long-term cooperation with the Kazakh state administration, universities and educational institutions.
