RDI2CluB adopted as Flagship of EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

In November 2017, RDI2CluB was adopted as a Flagship of Policy Area Bioeconomy by the EUSBSR National Coordinators. Flagships demonstrate the progress of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, and serve as pilot examples for desired action in the policy area. According to EU Strategy for Baltic Sea Region, Bioeconomy offers an abundance of opportunities to grow primary industries and opens up new development prospects in the rural areas.

Despite the vast potential, rural areas face challenges in economic transition and innovation management due to limited human capital and the lack of specialized clusters and network effects that are typical for urban areas. Nevertheless, digitalization offers new possibilities for building innovation management in transnational cooperation. RDI2CluB aims to leverage these possibilities for helping the rural RDI2CluB partner regions to augment their regional innovation system by developing a digital platform for transnational collaboration. The transnational model for innovation management creates a more dynamic innovation ecosystem that promotes regional economic transition to knowledge-based jobs and bioeconomy products and services with higher economic value.

– In RDI2CluB project, we are building capacity in the rural areas of Baltic Sea Region to realize their potential in bioeconomy via smart specialization and transnational cooperation in innovation management. The Flagship status helps us to highlight the rural development issues and to promote the potential for smart specialization in bioeconomy for rural regions and innovation systems.

– After the piloting phase, RDI2CluB partnership is opening the developed digital platform to the whole Baltic Sea Region in the interest of building a sustainable community of rural bioeconomy hubs. In this quest, the Flagship status provides us prominence and visibility to reach potential collaborators. Overall, we see that the Flagship status will enhance our communication efforts and assists us to share the results and outputs with the interested rural areas to strengthen smart specialization in bioeconomy around Baltic Sea region.
