High demand for competent teachers – application period open for JAMK’s teacher education

The 2014 joint application period for vocational teacher education colleges is open until Friday 24 January 2014. Also open for application are study places in JAMK’s international teacher education group, where representatives of various fields and nationalities meet.

Vocational teacher education provides a teacher’s pedagogical qualification, which is required for permanent teacher positions in Finland. Adult students have varied backgrounds: for example, the same group may include an engineer, agronomist, Bachelor of Social Services and Master of Economic Sciences.

– The majority of the students have been involved in teaching work before starting their studies. There are also some career changers, since skilled new people are always needed in teaching. All students manage the pace of their studies themselves, so they can study alongside work. The average student takes 18 months to graduate,” says Katariina Jouhiaho, Study Counsellor at JAMK’s Teacher Education College.

JAMK also offers post-degree programmes for teachers. Most of the vocational special needs teacher training in Jyväskylä can also be completed in English. Study counsellor training is only provided in Finnish.
In the international group, vocational teacher studies are completed in English. In addition to common seminar days, the training includes online studies and studies in smaller learning groups. In Jyväskylä, adult students get to use completely new kind of learning facilities. The colourful, living-room-like learning environment at the Lutakko campus is equipped with the latest technology.

– The furniture can be quickly rearranged to suit each learning situation, even within a single lesson. The ICT solutions in the environment, most of them wireless, are naturally integrated into various learning situations, says Minna Koskinen, New Media Designer at the Teacher Education College.

The application period for the training programmes is from 7 to 24 January 2014. Joint application in Finnish is open at www.opekorkeahaku.fi. An application form in English can be downloaded from JAMK’s Teacher Education College website
