About the project

RDI2CluB –project (Rural RDI milieus in transition towards smart bioeconomy clusters and innovation ecosystems), is part of the Interreg Baltic Sea region project family of 2014-2020 under the Priority 1 'Capacity for innovation' that is dedicated to actions strengthening the ability of the Baltic Sea Region to create and commercialize innovation.

Our mission was to help rural areas in the Baltic Sea Region to reach their full potential in bioeconomy. By 2030, the world will need 50% more food, 45% more energy, and 30% more water. The solution is bioeconomy that is based on the sustainable use of renewable resources as well as circular economy models. Bioeconomy utilizes clean technologies that enable the efficient use of natural resources and nutrients, while ensuring biodiversity and supporting climate change mitigation.

The rural areas of Baltic Sea Region (BSR) have a great potential for bioeconomy as they have rich natural resources. However, the rural regions in BSR struggle to reach their full bioeconomy potential due to limited human capital and the lack of specialized clusters and network effects that are typical for urban areas. In the rural regions, the small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in bioeconomy are mostly in traditional, resource-based industries that have not taken full advantage of latest technology and service innovations including digitalization.

Our approach was to build capacity for transnational cooperation in innovation management and smart specialization in bioeconomy

RDI2CluB united authorities, RDI institutes (research, development and innovation institutes) and business development bodies from five regions to a joint quest of boosting smart and sustainable bioeconomy development in the rural areas of Baltic Sea Region. The five regions of the RDI2CLuB partnership were:

  • Central Finland/Finland
  • Inland Norway
  • Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship/Poland
  • Vidzeme/Latvia
  • Estonia

Through international co-operation, the rural RDI2CluB partners expanded their regional innovation systems and created more efficient innovation ecosystem to support bioeconomy business development and bioeconomy innovation. The bioeconomy innovation ecosystem promotes the change for knowledge-based jobs, as well as bioeconomy products and services that have a higher economic value. The users of this innovation ecosystem (SME’s etc.) were part of the development process, for example local SME’s took part in local pilots in the RDI2CluB -project.

At the core of RDI2CluB is international learning. Regional bioeconomy profiles and joint action plans were part the process of build capacity for innovation. An operational innovation model and a digital platform, Biobord were created as the results. The joint innovation model and the Biobord -platform were piloted with SMEs. In order to enhance the international aspect of the co-operation in bioeconomy innovation, a group of clusters were also asked to test the platform and operating model.

The international network, provided by Biobord -platform and operational innovation model, enables local SMEs to explore their international market values in different areas of the Baltic Sea region. They have more opportunities to find new international partners, clients and customers and opportunities to develop suitable products for these markets.

Our solution: Biobord – Connecting bioeconomy developers around Baltic Sea Region

Biobord connects bioeconomy innovation networks around the Baltic Sea Region to share ideas, find partners and work together to create business opportunities in bioeconomy. Together we build knowledge and raise awareness on sustainable and viable bioeconomy business potential in Baltic Sea Region. Biobord is a place for you, if you are interested in viable and sustainable biobased business and networking with bioeconomy developers around the Baltic Sea Region. Find people with shared interests, team up and get support from our network of bioeconomy experts to build your business or launch your innovation to the markets. JAMK University of Applied Sciences has agreed to maintain Biobord-platform until the end of 2025.


Life after RDI2CluB-project

Even though RDI2CluB project has become to its end, the actions and results will stay alive. The development of the main outputs of RDI2CluB-project (Biobord-platform, Operating Model and Joint Action Plan) will continue in an extension phase project called ConnectedByBiobord (10/2020 – 06/2021). Also, RDI2CluB partners have established official Biobord Network to safeguard the use and upgrading of Biobord-platform, Operating Model and Joint Action Plan. All RDI2CluB partners can be found from Biobord-platform after the project and the well-established cooperation and co-development of bioeconomy will continue.
