Study counselling in the Teacher Education College has especially focused on the development of adult guidance.

By 2015, approximately one million current workers will retire or otherwise become unavailable for working life. Therefore, the lengthening of working careers, the promotion of professional mobility and the improvement of the functionality of working life is important. At the same time, one goal is to increase entrepreneur activity and raise the employment rate.

In counselling, a person analyses his/her world and goals independently, in a group or with the counsellor in a way that enables the student's ability to create and implement the development of his/her own life plans. The target areas of study counselling are learning, studying and career-choice as well as supporting the students' personal growth and development.

The main focus of study counselling is the personalisation and recognition of studies. Recognising and acknowledging the competences of the adult population requires new means and methods. The new practices of educational institutes include outreach activity, educational materials charting and the training of workplace tutors. Moreover, the development of study counselling focuses on strengthening the learning prerequisites of adults with little education, and their guidance and support. The support measures focus on the special needs arising from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds or learning difficulties.

Guiding adults in choosing a career is being developed by building user-friendly information, counselling and guidance services, which meet the adult students' needs. The most significant project in adult counselling is the Opin Ovi (Door to Learning) project family, which creates regional adult counselling service systems. There are 30 regional active Opin Ovi projects in Finland, which are all supported by the adult guidance coordination project administered by the Jyväskylä Teacher Education College.
