According to the principles of the recognition of prior learning (RPL), all students have the right to have their competence recognised, regardless of when and how it has been acquired.

RPL makes students' competences visible and helps students to develop their competences. Through the recognition of competence, the student gets official acknowledgement of his/her prior learning, and the studies can be personalised.

  • Recognition of competence is the stage where the competence of the student is recognised. The recognition will be the basis of the official acknowledgement.
  • Acknowledgement of competence means giving an official acknowledgement of one's prior learning by, for example, issuing a certificate or a diploma. The competence can be registered as a study attainment.
  • Personalisation is closely connected to the recognition of prior learning. The learning and guidance are personalised in order to take the students' personal conditions into account.

The development of flexible learning opportunities and guidance and evaluation systems is one of the focal points of our education system. We have been a part of the development of RPL since the 1970s. We have participated, for example, in the founding of the adult education of specialists in competence-based qualifications. We have been developing the recognition of vocational secondary level competence since the early 1990s, and universities' RPL operations since the early 2000s.
