Frequently Asked Questions about the Thesis

Your unit (school) bears the ultimate responsibility for guiding your thesis process. If you have any questions concerning your thesis, contact your thesis supervisor.

The Education Development Services bears the overall responsibility for providing guidance on the thesis process in JAMK. Library's thesis instructions can be found at http://www.jamk.fi/library/theses/instructions.

Cover Page and Description Page(s)

How can I add the cover page and the description page(s) to the body of the thesis?

1) Follow the instructions at http://www.jamk.fi/library/theses/instructions/pdf. Create separate PDF files of the cover page, description page(s), and the body of the thesis. Combine the files into one PDF file. In this format, the document is ready for national and international distribution.

2) If your thesis supervisor asks you to submit the thesis in the Word or other similar format to be able to add comments to it, you can send the text to him/her without the cover page and the description page(s). If he/she also wants to see the cover page and the description page(s), you can send them as separate files. (If you know how to combine the cover page, description page(s) and the body of the thesis into one file in Word or other word processing programme that you use, you can naturally do so.)

3) If you submit your thesis to the thesis supervisor as a hard copy, print out the files (cover page, description page(s), and the body of the thesis) and put them into the right order before taking them to him/her.

What software can I use to convert the files to PDF format?

The original text can be produced with any common word processing programme. JAMK uses Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Word (remote access servers).

To convert a Word file to a PDF file, use the PDF-XChange programme as a “printer”. The programme is installed on all JAMK’s computers and remote access servers. PDF-XChange also combines separate files (cover page, description page(s) and body of the thesis) into one PDF file.

Please note that the use the free demo version of PDF-XChange is not allowed.

Library and Archive Copies

How many copies of the thesis do I have to submit?

Two copies: one for the Library and one for archiving purposes.

If you give a permission to publish your thesis online and enter your thesis into Theseus, you need not submit a hard copy to the Library. If you do not give permission to publish your thesis online, you must submit a bound hard copy to JAMK’s Library. As the practices vary between the degree programmes, ask your thesis supervisor for instructions on how the library copy should be bound and submitted.

Each unit (school) is responsible for making sure that the theses are archived in a proper way. The archive copy is an additional copy to the copy submitted to the library. The archive copy is an unbound copy of the thesis and it is archived by your unit/school
