The Rules of JAMK Library
The Right to Use the Library
The library’s basic services are open to all staff and students as well as the general public. The right to use enables the customer to use the library’s resources, services and premises according to the Library Rules. The library’s information seeking guidance and information searches are free of charge to the students and staff of JAMK. The fee-based services are charged according to the Library Service Fees.
The customer must comply with the Library Rules and other guidelines; otherwise the library may suspend the borrowing rights.
Lending
Borrowing rights are given to anyone who, while registering as a borrower, supplies the information requested by the library and proves his/her identity with an identity card containing a photograph. The library card is personal and must be presented each time material is borrowed. The first library card is free of charge. There is a charge for a lost or damaged library card according to the Library Service Fees. JAMKO’s student card and the library cards of the Aalto libraries and Jyväskylä University Library can be activated and used as a library card in JAMK’s library units. The customer is responsible for all the materials borrowed on the card.
The customer is informed on overdue material by email and must pay overdue fines. The right to borrow is cancelled if unpaid fines exceed the amount defined in the Library Service Fees, or if the loaned material is too long overdue. Blocked customers are notified by mail. The block is removed when all the fines are paid and the material is returned. Unpaid fines are forwarded to the library’s debt collection and they are distrainable.
The loan periods for other materials vary between the library units. The library may change the loan periods.
Renewing Loans
Loans can be renewed ten times at the most. Reserved items cannot be renewed. Renewal can be done online, by phone or at the library's check-out desk.
Reserving and Returning Library Items
Material out on loan can be requested by placing a hold on it. The requested material is delivered to the library unit chosen by the customer. The materials are transported on a daily basis. Materials available on the shelf are not delivered to the other library units and they cannot be reserved. Loans can be returned to any of the libraries of JAMK. Night and weekend loans must be returned to the library unit in which they were borrowed.
Interlibrary Service
The interlibrary service is a lending and duplication service between libraries. At the customer's request, material not found at the library of JAMK, or at other local libraries, can be ordered from elsewhere as loans or copies. A lending fee and postage will be charged for interlibrary loans. The library sending the loan determines the fees and the loan period, as well as other possible terms of use for an interlibrary loan. The customer must comply with the loan terms and compensate for potential costs caused by neglect. The items available at the library of JAMK can also be requested by other libraries.
Customer’s Rights
Library customers have the right to
-
use the library’s resources and premises,
-
request material not available on the shelf,
-
return loans to any of the libraries of JAMK,
-
use the interlibrary loan service,
-
give feedback to the library
-
place acquisition requests.
A customer may authorize another person to borrow items on his/her behalf by giving the authorized person the library card. On request, the authorized person must prove his/her identity.
According to the Personal Data Act (523/1999), every library customer has the right to check his/her information in the library’s customer register. The customer can renounce his/her borrowing rights by returning the library card to any of the libraries of JAMK, in which case his/her personal data is removed from the library’s customer register.
Customer’s Responsibilities
The customer must comply with the Library Rules. The customer must comply with Copyright Law when copying and using computer services at the library.
When loaning, the customer binds himself/herself to return the material by the due date within the library opening hours. The customer must pay potential overdue fines and other fines determined by the library (please see the Library Service Fees). Email notification on due dates is an additional service. Potential failures in email or web services will not release the customer from the liability to pay fines.
The customer is obligated to compensate the library for lost or damaged material. The customer must primarily replace a lost or damaged item with an equivalent new item, or pay bookstore price. A film recording cannot be replaced with an equivalent new item.
The customer must notify the library about contact information changes, as well as about a lost library card.
All the library users are expected to be considerate of others and keep noise to a minimum. Cell phones must not be used in the public premises of the library.
Library’s Rights and Responsibilities
The library’s customer register complies with the Personal Data Act and it is only used for the supervision of borrowing. Customer information is not transferred to outside parties, except for the customer information delivered to JAMK’s collection agency for invoicing purposes. The library has the right to register the customer’s social security number. The file description is available at the library and on the library website.
Information on opening hours is available at the library, on the library website and in the other media of JAMK. The opening hours are determined by the library director.
The Library is not Responsible for
-
potential failures in email or web services,
-
potential damage caused by any borrowed material to the customer’s own equipment,
-
potential library equipment failures or damage caused by computer viruses,
-
customer belongings left in the library.
The Library Rules are valid as of 4 April 2008. Updated on 30 June 2009
