Studying at the library
Why are there too few computers in the library?
All the students of JAMK can use classroom FK14 (Rajakatu 35) between lessons. Please check out available computers in all the units. There is a wireless network in the Library.
Is there a quiet room for reading in the library?
Unfortunately the library provides no absolutely quiet space to study.
The most peaceful place in the Main Library is the loft, intended for all the students of JAMK.
Remember that we all can contribute to a silent study environment.
So, please keep your cell phone switched off or on silent mode in the library.
Can I print in the library?
There are slight differences between the library units regarding printing. The students of JAMK can buy printing credits from the library.
Where can I find help if I have problems with computers?

Material
Why do only some library units offer field-specific materials (e.g. on information technology)?
When acquisitions are made, each library unit specialises in its own degree programmes. Customers can use all the libraries. Materials out on loan can be requested by placing a hold on them, and the requested materials are delivered to the library unit chosen by the customer.
Read more about acquisitions: Library's Collection Policy.
Why are there all too few course books in the libraries?
The financial resources for course materials are limited. The library acquires as comprehensive a collection as possible. If there was a book for every student in a specific course, it would be impossible to acquire several other important books.
The library also provides electronic books.
Read more about course book acquisitions: Library's Collection Policy.
Is there a reference book for every course book?
Yes, there is a reference book for most of the course books. You can read the reference book at the library and borrow it overnight and over the weekend. For more information, please contact the library staff.
How can I borrow materials not included in the library’s collection?
Customers can place an acquisition request by using this form.
The library delivers interlibrary loans, too.
Check out the library’s electronic resources.
The Music Campus Library purchases records, as well, and customers can place an acquisition request for them.
How can I find out what new materials the library has purchased?
Please see Recent Acquisitions or New Books on the JaNet library database.

Service
How can I obtain a library card?
Borrowing rights and a free library card are given to anyone who, while registering as a borrower, supplies the information requested by the library and proves his or her identity by presenting an ID containing a photograph. The library card can be used in all the libraries of JAMK.
The library card is personal. The customer is responsible for all the materials borrowed on the card.
JAMKO's student card can be used as a library card.
We can activate the library cards of the Aalto libraries and Jyväskylä University Library, but our collections and library rules are different. Our materials can be returned only to JAMK’s library units.
Please use this form to apply for a library card, or visit your library.
What is my PIN? How do I change it?
You need a PIN (personal identification number) when renewing loans on the JaNet library database. You also need your library card barcode and family name when renewing loans.
The default PIN is 12345. You must change it on the JaNet library database, by clicking Patron Information.
The PIN must contain between 5 and 12 characters, both numbers and letters are accepted. Special characters are not allowed. PINs are also case-sensitive.
PINs increase data security and are commonly used by university libraries. The library staff will help you if you forget your PIN, etc.
You will also need your PIN for the Ellibs eBook service.
What if I lose my library card?
In order to prevent malpractice, you must immediately inform the library about the lost library card.
A new library card costs 3 euros.
How can I renew my loans?
Renewal is easiest online on the JaNet library database. Renewal is also possible by phone or at the library's check out desk. Renewal is possible 10 times at the most. Reserved items cannot be renewed.
Why do the libraries close too early and stay closed on Saturdays?
The Main Library has longer opening hours and it is open also on Saturdays. Check out the opening hours of the Main Library and the computer classroom FK14.
The other libraries have also tested extended opening hours, but there were very few customers.
Can I reserve books and how much does it cost?
Items out on loan can be requested by placing a hold on them via our JaNet library database. It is free of charge.
See how to make a request.
Requesting reference books: Please contact the library staff.
Where can I return my loans?
Loans can be returned to any of the libraries of JAMK.
When the libraries and front doors are closed, loans can be returned to the Main Library’s drop box by the F1 door (Rajakatu 35).
Are books delivered from unit to unit?
Items out on loan can be requested by placing a hold on them, and the requested items are delivered to the library unit chosen by the customer. Materials available on the shelf are not delivered to the other library units and they cannot be reserved.
Where can I find help on information seeking?
The library offers training on different topics.
See also how to use the JaNet library database.
Your library’s staff will also be happy to help you.
What if my loans are overdue or I have lost library materials?
Overdue notices are sent by email and overdue fines are collected. Blocked customers are notified by mail. A block is removed when all the fines are paid and the material is returned. An invoice is sent for unreturned loans about one month after the block.
The customer must pay bookstore price for a lost or damaged item or replace the item with an equivalent one. A video tape or DVD cannot be replaced with an equivalent item.
Check out the list of service prices.
How can I give feedback to the library?
Please use this form to send feedback to the library.
Read more about customer service: Library Service Policy
Must I notify the library if my contact information changes?
Yes, you must. Changes will not automatically be updated via the student management system Asio.
Please use this form to change your address or other contact information, or visit your library.
What payment methods are accepted at the library?
Means of payment at the JAMK libraries are cash, credit and bank cards, and Visa Electron. At the Institute of Natural Resources Library only cash is accepted.

Electronic services
Can I access library’s electronic resources from home?
The students and staff of JAMK can access all the electronic resources when logged in JAMK’s network, or remotely when logged in to the Nelli portal or through the Remote Desktop.
Outside JAMK’s network you can access only the free resources.
What is Nelli?
Nelli is a portal including all the electronic materials of the library. Nelli is also a national information retrieval system and the abbreviation for National Electronic Library Interface.
Where can I find the bachelor’s theses of my degree programme?
Use the Nelli portal. Choose Find Database and choose the letter J. Select your degree programme.
Where can I find instructions for my bachelor’s thesis?
Check out the library’s website, Theses.
What does interlibrary service mean? Can I order books from other libraries?
Interlibrary service is a lending and duplication service between libraries.
Interlibrary loans are always ordered via the library.
If the required material is not available in the collection of JAMK library or the other local libraries, such as Jyväskylä University Library or the Aalto libraries, it can be ordered from other libraries.
A lending fee and postage will be charged for interlibrary loans.
The library sending a loan determines the fees and the loan period, as well as other possible terms of use for an interlibrary loan. Read more.
