Images are culturally, philosophically and historically developed. The purpose of this book is to offer concept-ual frameworks for thinking about images through a range of issues which have arisen out of intense specul-ation on the different meanings connected with images. It is first and foremost a book about the questions, and ideas that the continuing significance of images in con-temporary reality has given rise to. The scientific, philosophical, and historical con-texts of the images are also examined. This book is intended to all scholars and students of media.

Jarmo Valkola did his Ph.D. on visual perception related to cinematic thinking. He is the Senior Fellow of Cinema and Media Studies in Media Design Programme at the School of Cultural Studies, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences, and an Adjunct Professor of Film Theory and History at the University of Tallinn / Baltic Film and Media School. He has a position of a Docent in Audiovisual Perception at the University of Lapland, and another similar position in Art Education, especially Film Theory, at the University of Jyväskylä. He has written twelve books on Cinema, Art, and Aesthetics.
