Accident Insurances of JAMK

JAMK has a statutory accident insurance, which covers damages occurring in circumstances typical of the mode of study based on the curriculum or degree requirements. This insurance is valid when students take part in practical instruction equivalent to work, competence-based studies, on-the-job learning or unsalaried practical training taking place in an educational institution or other setting provided by the organiser of the training or instruction or by the maintainer of the educational institution. Even though the insurance is in force also during unsalaried work practice abroad, it is recommended to take an additional travel insurance for studies and practical trainings completed abroad.

Damage is compensated for in compliance with the Act on study-related accidents (1318/2002). If a student is paid for the practical training, thus having an employment relation with the employer, an accident is covered by the employer’s statutory accident insurance. An accident is regarded as a compensable damage if it is sudden and unpredictable. Intentional damage is not considered an accident. The accident insurance covers nursing costs such as examination, treatment and medicine ordered by a physician, as well as necessary travel expenses. Students may also be entitled to a compensation for the loss of earnings due to an accident, i.e. a calculated daily allowance.

JAMK also has an optional accident insurance, which applies to activities pertaining to the curriculum during the actual study periods, in classes, physical education, breaks, during sports activities and outings, visits to exhibitions, museums and factories as parts of the curriculum, and on the shortest way to school and back home. Application forms for compensation are available at the Student Services. Injury treatment expenses are compensated for as far as they are not covered by some other Act. The student must first pay for the expenses and then apply for their compensation in compliance with the Health Insurance Act.

Liability Insurance

JAMK does not have a liability insurance to cover for potential damage caused by students to the property of the employer, e.g. cars, machines and appliances, during their practical training (labour market training is an exception to this). In these cases, trainees are usually treated in the same way as the staff, irrespective of whether they are salaried or unsalaried. Damages caused by carelessness are paid by the students themselves or possibly covered by their home insurance.

Insurance Coverage for International Students

International students coming to JAMK should take care of insurance coverage for the time of their stay before arriving in Finland.

Health insurance is very important to international students. Further information is available under Health Services for Foreign Students. The insurance should also cover free time.

The accident insurances of JAMK cover only degree students in the cases mentioned before. Exchange students must also take an insurance covering the time of their actual studies at JAMK.
