Registration Procedures and Study Entitlement
Enrolment as Student and Receiving a Study Entitlement
Registration is completed by informing JAMK University of Applied Sciences that applicant accepts the student place and enrolling for attendance or non-attendance. Students admitted to JAMK are granted a ‘study entitlement’ and they can begin their studies after the application documents are checked.
Enrolment for Attendance/Non-attendance
In order to retain their study entitlement, students must enrol for attendance/non-attendance via ASIO student management system (user identifier required) every semester during the enrolment period.
Enrolment for the spring semester can be done simultaneously with the enrolment for the preceding autumn semester. Enrolment may be changed from attendance to non-attendance or vice versa by contacting the Student Services - only during the enrolment period, not in the middle of a semester.
Enrolment for attendance guarantees the study entitlement and the right to register for and attend courses, to complete courses and to apply for a degree certificate.
With the grant from the student services manager, students can enrol for non-attendance for a total maximum of two semesters during their studies. Enrolment for non-attendance does not reduce the maximum study period. Non-attending students do not have the right to attend classes (nor through the Finnish Online University of Applied Sciences), or register credits.
Standard Study Period and Maximum Study Period
Master’s degree programmes are offered as part-time study, so that they can be completed while working. The scope of studies is determined in ECTS credits, and it varies from 60 to 90 credits, depending on the degree programme. It is also possible to take studies as a full-time student.
Standard Study Period
The standard study period for a master’s degree programme consisting of 60 ECTS credits is 4 semesters (two years), whereas it is 6 semesters (3 years) for a degree programme of 90 credits.
Maximum Study Period
If the degree is not completed within the standard study period, the student has the right to continue his/her studies for two more semester (standard study period + 2 semesters = maximum study period). In the Master’s degrees, the maximum study period is 6 semesters for a degree programme of 60 ECTS credits, and 8 semesters for a degree programme of 90 ECTS credits.
Students who have exceeded their standard study period should exclusively concentrate on completing the obligatory studies of their degree. If they do not manage to complete their degree within the maximum study period, they will lose their study entitlement. In such a case, only the student services manager can grant an extension.
Expiration of Standard and Maximum Study Periods
The standard and maximum study periods expire either on 31 July or 31 December (on 31 January for students who have started their studies before 2007).
Extension Granted by the Student Services Manager
Students who have not completed their degree during their maximum study period can apply for an extension. In general, a study period can be extended once with a maximum of two semesters if the following conditions are met:
1) A Master’s Degree student has a maximum of 30 left to complete.
2) Graduation within the extension period is a realistic goal.
The student must commit to his/her studies during the extension period and meet with the person responsible for study counselling regularly. The student cannot enrol as a non-attending student during the extension period.
If the student is unable to complete his/her studies within the extension period, the student may apply for another extension only if he/she has participated in teaching and exams during the previous extension period or has in some other way shown effort to complete the studies. At this stage, the student cannot have more than 15 credits left to complete. If there is no evidence of studying, the medical condition or an exceptionally difficult life situation of the student or someone in his/her immediate family may constitute acceptable grounds for extending the study period. Significant positions of trust, successful scientific or artistic activities and top-level sports may also be accepted as reasons for an extension. The grounds shall be verified with reliable documents.
Application forms and instructions are available here or at the Student Services. In accordance with the Government's Decree 1230/2009, a fee of € 35 is payable for the handling of the application.
The extension must be applied for within the maximum study period, yet at least two months before the maximum study period expires. The application is attached a revised study plan approved by the career tutor/programme coordinator, justifications, a transcript of records and a receipt of paid application handling fee.
Restoring a Lost Study Entitlement
Students who do not enrol for attendance or non-attendance or have not finished their degree within the maximum study period will lose their study entitlement.
Those who have not enrolled for attendance or non-attendance can apply to the student services manager for a new study entitlement, if they have not exceeded the maximum study period. Forms and instructions are available here or at the Student Services. In accordance with the Government's Degree 1230/2009, a fee of € 35 is payable for the handling of the application. The application is attached a revised study plan approved by the career tutor/programme coordinator, justifications, a transcript of records and a receipt of paid application handling fee.
If the study entitlement is granted, the student in question can continue studying at the beginning of the following semester. All the semesters without a study entitlement due to non-enrolment will count as semesters reducing the maximum allowed non-attendance time. When all the allowed non-attendance semesters (2 in Master´s Degree Programmes) have been used, non-attendance due to non-enrolment will start reducing the maximum study period.
If a student has not finished the degree within the maximum study period (or the granted extension) he/she cannot apply for the restoration of the study entitlement. The student can re-apply for admission to education.
