Accommodation

JAMK does not provide student accommodation. Different alternatives for student housing in the various locations are briefly presented below.

Accommodation in Jyväskylä

KOAS Student Accommodation

In Jyväskylä, student accommodation is provided by the Central Finland Student Housing Foundation KOAS. The rents of KOAS apartments are usually lower than in the free market, because the foundation does not aim at making profit. Students can live in the accommodation provided by Koas during their entire enrolment period.

KOAS has 79 accommodation units in different parts of Jyväskylä. The majority of the apartments are small flats, studios, two-roomed flats, and cell apartments for two or three students. Over 4000 students live in the KOAS apartments. Some cell apartments are furnished (bed, mattress, desk, chair, a kitchen table and chairs). In the cell apartments, all the residents have their own lockable rooms and share the use of a kitchen and bathroom with the other residents of the apartment.

Access to the Internet is inclusive in the rent of all the apartments through Funet network maintained by the University of Jyväskylä. The rents of the KOAS apartments also include electricity, water and launderette costs, as well as sauna at specific times. The rents vary depending on the building’s age, location and level of equipment .The average monthly rent is 11 euros / m2.

On the Koas website you will find detailed information and an application form. You can apply for a room after you have received a formal letter of acceptance from JAMK.

Further Information for International Students

International students usually stay in the furnished cell apartments of KOAS (Central Finland Student Housing Foundation) in Roninmäki and Myllyjärvi. The rent of a cell apartment with one room and a shared kitchen and bathroom usually varies between 190 and 320 euros per month. Linen, blankets and kitchenware are not included in the rent. Foreign students need to submit an application on the KOAS website, after which they are offered a flat by e-mail. A deposit has to be paid to reserve the apartment (250 euros for a cell apartment, 350 euros for other types of accommodation). The deposit is returned if no damage or shortages are noticed in the room inspection when the student moves out.

The international coordinators of the Schools of JAMK assist the incoming exchange students. Students must remember to inform the International Affairs Office as soon as they know their date of arrival.

All students should submit a Change of Address Notification to Posti and/or a Local Register Office. All changes of address from Finland to abroad and to Finland from abroad must be notified either over the Internet or by using a paper form. Further information on the website of Posti.

Accommodation in Saarijärvi

Most students of the Institute of Natural Resources live in the apartments rented from the town of Saarijärvi and from private renters. Further information on the apartments rented by the town is available at the Saarijärvi Housing Services. The contact information of private renters is available at the Student Services of the Institute of Natural Resources.

Change of Address Notification

A change of address notification must be made one month before the actual date of moving or within seven days from the date on which you move. You can make a change of address notification either on the Internet, or by phone. Further information on the change-of-address notification.

Short-Term Accommodation

Jyväskylä and Saarijärvi offer various opportunities for short-term accommodation. For example, there are several hotels in the centre of Jyväskylä, and Hostel Laajari is located in Laajavuori, a few kilometres from the centre.
