Barrier-free learning environment

Everybody has the right to study in a barrier-free environment. You can study in accordance with your plans even if you suffer from a disability or learning difficulties or came from a different cultural or language background or if there are other matters affecting your studies. You get support for your studies.

Barrier-free student selection process

The entrance examinations may require special arrangements for those with hearing impairment, sight impairment or diminished physical capability. If you require special arrangements (assistive devices, special facilities) at JAMK, please contact Student Services, tel. +358 40 542 1371, hakutoimisto@jamk.fi for further assistance.

Study counsellors, tutors and study psychologist

Study counsellors also provide advice for students with special needs. They can determine the type of support you need and help you in the arrangements. You will also be provided with a career tutor who will guide you in the preparation of your Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your study counsellor will give the contact details of your career tutor. Student tutors will support you in practical study-related problems. You can also turn to the student union JAMKO for help. The study psychologist will help you in matters concerning studying, motivation, learning and coping with your work.

Barrier-free studying

If you need support or special arrangements during your studies, consult first your study counsellor and complete the application form for additional assistance which is available in Word doc format or pdf.

The support may involve longer exams, alternative exam practices, online studies, additional training for language skills, interpreter services and different assistive devices. In most cases, lecture and other material can also be provided in advance. If you suffer from reading, writing or perception difficulties that affect your study performance, why not join the Tsemppis group. JAMK’s library helps you in the search for information. The Thesis Sauna may also be useful, while International Services provide you with information about international studies and practical training.

All JAMK facilities are not yet completely barrier-free. Most cafeterias are barrier-free and the needs of those with special diets are taken into account. All libraries are also barrier-free. The auditoriums Tulikari (D212) and Valjakka (FP05) on the Main Campus and Dynamo’s auditorium in Lutakko have induction loops. You can borrow an induction loop at the information desk of the Main Campus. For more information about the accessibility of JAMK’s facilities and plans concerning them, contact Facility Manager Jonna Järvisalo.
