Legislation and Decisions

JAMK’s degrees are based on

  • Act on the Amendment of the Polytechnics Act,
  • Decree on the Amendment of Government Decree on Polytechnics,
  • Decree on the Amendment of the Decree concerning the Higher Education Degree System,
  • regulations and decisions concerning educational mission,
  • the decisions of Jyväskylä Polytechnic Ltd,
  • the Ordinance of JAMK,
  • Degree Regulations (please see below).

Degree Regulations

The Degree Regulations of JAMK guide the studying and education and define, for example, the following matters:

  • The right to study / study entitlement: student admission, enrolment, maximum study period, losing and restoring the right to study
  • The studies: curricula, Personal Learning Plan (PLP), accreditation, assessment practices
  • Graduation
  • Drug testing
  • Disciplinary Procedure
  • Appeals to the decisions of the University of Applied Sciences.

Pedagogical Principles

The student is the most central actor in the learning process. Pedagogy at the JAMK University of Applied Sciences is based on supporting expertise and professional growth. The teacher functions as the enabler and supporter of the learning process.

In accordance with pedagogical principles, the study plans and curricula are based on competence and development needs verified by representatives of working life. The structures enabling the studies are flexible.

Pedagogical Principles of JAMK were approved by the Academic Board on 15 December 2010.

Ethical Principles

The values of JAMK are responsibility, trust and creativity. All the members of the community of JAMK follow these values in their activities. In addition, our activities are based on general ethical principles regarding studies, instruction, research activities, and on further field-specific ethical specifications.

The Ethical Principles of JAMK describe the main principles and practices enhancing a critical approach, truthfulness, community spirit, and impartiality in our higher education community. They simultaneously standardise and clarify the ethical practices for all the parties. The document presents the tasks of the Ethical Committee, guidelines for handling actual or suspected ethical misconduct, and ethical principles separately for students and staff.

Degree Programmes and ECTS

The Quality Manual of JAMK describes the planning process of new degree programmes, as well as the process for renewing existing degree programmes. Principles of the curricula are approved every year by the Academic Board of JAMK. The curricula of the degree programmes are approved each year by the Vice Rector.

The ECTS principles in brief: A normally progressing full-time student completes 30 credits per semester. The extent of the whole academic year is 60 credits. The credits used in Finland today are 100 percent equivalent to ECTS credits.

Quality Manual

Process descriptions are a part of the quality management of JAMK. High-quality operation is based on doing the right things effectively and in a jointly agreed way. The processes governing all the activities are presented in the Quality Manual (only in Finnish), which students can also read using their network user ID.
