Internationality through Studies

JAMK offers several alternatives to develop your interaction and communication skills needed in today’s globalized world. Regardless of your future occupational image international and communication skills will be an asset. You can either study the whole degree in English or choose some of the courses conducted in English as a part of your degree. In addition, the Language Center offers a variety of language and culture studies.

You can complete part of your degree abroad by studying and/or doing your practical training there. The International Coordinator of your School will help you with the practical arrangements of the exchange period abroad. Grants are awarded for studies and practical training.

Studying Abroad

JAMK is involved in many exchange programmes, such as Norplus and Erasmus. At the moment JAMK has over 250 agreements of cooperation with partners in over 50 countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa. JAMK strives to offer the students, teachers and experts good opportunities for internationalisation through a versatile network of cooperation.

Students may spend one or two semesters abroad studying at one of the partner institutions. During the exchange period abroad, students will gain first-hand experience of the challenges of living in a foreign country and culture - the type of experience today’s employers are looking for. The exchange period abroad is an opportunity to improve professional as well as personal skills, explore other languages and cultures and create networks with new friends from all over the world.

For those interested in studying abroad, the International Services publishes yearly the Exchange Period Abroad guide, providing information on student mobility and the international partners of JAMK. You will find printed versions of the guide at the International Services, at the Student Services on the Main Campus, and at the offices of the International Coordinators. The electronic guide, information on exchanges as well as the necessary forms are also available in the student portal (requires user id) in the workspaces Opinfoorumi and Study Forum in the section Internationality through Studies.

JAMK uses the ECTS system to transfer credits in international student mobility. The sending and the receiving institutions agree on the study plan with each student before the exchange period. The student must submit a study plan (Learning Agreement) with his/her electronic application form for approval to the International Coordinator of his/her school. The documents will be then forwarded to the receiving institution by the International Services. The study plan is returned to the student, signed by both parties. After the studies abroad, the receiving institution gives a certificate and a transcript of records showing progress and outcome of studies.

The studies completed abroad according to the learning agreement are fully accredited to the degree taken at JAMK. The prerequisite for the accreditation of studies is that the student has completed the studies in accordance with the performance level and objectives of JAMK. The Head of Programme makes the decision on crediting the studies.

Practical Training outside Finland

Degree students can also complete their practical training also abroad. They can either find the place independently or through different exchange programmes or company-specific programmes. The Centre for International Mobility CIMO coordinates student exchange programmes in various fields.

Internationalization at Home

It's possible for you to gain international experience and know-how right here at JAMK together with fellow-students, lecturers and other personnel. In addition to studying a degree or part of it in English you can also study different languages and cultures, participate in the activities arranged by JAMKO's International Club for Finnish and foreign students as well as act as a tutor to students from different countries. All of these options give you an opportunity to become more international at home.
