The Degree Programme in Paper Machine Technology is the only one of its kind in Finland.

The programme will provide you with versatile competences for hi-tech work involving the design of paper machines for the global market or expertise in maintenance. Through the projects assigned by companies you will create a comprehensive network in the industry.

Content of Studies

For the first two years, you will complete basic studies together with the other students of mechanical engineering. The key topic areas of your studies include:

  • machine design
  • the paper manufacturing process
  • automation
  • the latest technological design and maintenance systems.

Specialization options:

  • paper machine automation
  • paper design
  • plant design
  • maintenance.

Implementation of Studies


The programme consists of lectures, team and project work, laboratory work, online learning, assignments in a virtual learning environment, and exams. It also includes a practical training, completed in companies of the industry, worth 30 ECTS credits. The practical training takes place in the autumn semester of the third year. Practical training and part of the studies can also be completed outside Finland.

Eligibility Criteria

Studies in the programme call for an interest in technology and in the development of the industry, as well as in equipment engineering. The projects assigned by companies are an important part of the studies.

Employment Prospects

In 2007 almost 70% of the programme’s graduates had a job upon graduation, and 90% of them were employed in Central Finland. The engineers specialized in paper machine technology can be employed in expert, design, development and managerial tasks of the industry. Possible job titles include e.g. paper machine engineer, automation engineer, plant engineer, and maintenance engineer.

Admission Criteria and Applying

You can apply for admission if you have completed general upper secondary education, the matriculation examination or if you have a vocational qualification. If you will graduate during the spring in which you are submitting your application, please refer to your latest school certificate in your application. Eligibility for Further Studies

After graduating as a Bachelor of Engineering, you can continue your studies at a university of applied sciences. With three years of work experience you can apply for admission to a master’s programme of the field. At the School of Engineering and Technology, you can choose either the Master’s Degree Programme in Logistics or that in Technological Competence Management.
